Tongue Tie -clipped but how long for pain to end?

PTT was clipped yesterday and there was a small immediate improvement. Last night felt like the pain was the same as before the procedure though and today we are slightly better again. How long until BFing is pain-free?!
DD is 3 weeks and I feel really deflated that I am still sore and as a result still dreading feeds. Her PTT was described as mild but there is a visible improvement in tongue movement.

Any advice/info appreciated!!

Could it be your nipples are still sore from before and you need them to recover before it feels better? I know that was the case for me. I felt immediate relief then it hurt later that day then by end of week brilliant hope it gets better quickly.

Or baby just getting used to new technique?

Michellephant · 10/01/2014 15:52

I thought that might be the case but then she hurt them more during the night last night so I wasn't sure? I'm hoping that is the case though as I feel desperate!

My LOs PTT was snipped the week before Xmas. I've found a gradual improvement rather than an overnight change. Also for me the late evenings / nights were always the worst as we were both tired (when her latch gets lazy and my pain threshold is lower) and that can still be the case occasionally now. But the pain is way less now!

Good luck and well done for keeping going

Is there a bf support group you can go to? Dd wasn't tt but I still found feeding painful, when I went to the group they were able to help me with my latch (which I had thought was fine) and things improved immediately.

Also 3 weeks is early days, I think it was about 5/6 weeks before I really got the hang of it.

I read something on here just after my DS's had been snipped that summed it up for me : Snipping a TT is often described as the solution to a poor latch when when really it's the beginning of the solution. When I looked into it, I found out that the baby has to relearn how to latch (a relief as DS couldn't latch on Fo r 17 days so we had to re teach him? And when he finally got it, I was still in pain). I read a lot of Dr Jack Newman's articles (google "When latching" and also his video on exaggerated latching) and it helped enormously. Also, have a good look at your nipple. If the pain is in a particular place, it might be a small angle adjustment or (and I had this too) some scar tissue might be hiding a milk blister which is causing pain.

Is it just the first 20 seconds or so that's painful?

That's how it was for me with both dc, agonising at the latch but ok after that. I found this stopped after 4-6 weeks.

We had PTT snipped just after 2 weeks and I was hoping for overnight change. I'm afraid as tulip says the improvement was more gradual. He just used to grab the nipple in his mouth and suck for dear life, which was agony!

Definitely try to get some help with the latch, your dd will need to re-learn how to latch on. For me things suddenly got better around 6 weeks and now (15 weeks today) it's lovely. Hang in there, it will get better!

I wish it was just the letdown that hurt but sadly when it hurts it is the whole feed. It has improved, just isn't amazing. At least it isn't bad for every feed though, that gives me hope!

I had my baby on 27th, he had his tongue tie snipped last Wednesday and it has taken 3-4 days for the pain to almost disappear. I'd say its a combination of him latching on better and my nipples healing from having been clamped down on for a few weeks! He's getting better day by day and now I only get some pain during the initial let down. Hang in there, it should improve! And if it doesn't get some help with the latch as that made a huge difference to me. Good luck!

with us it took about 5 days to notice an improvement and another 5 days till it was transformed
