Can I use Olbas Oil whilst breastfeeding?

Have got terribly painful blocked sinuses (suspect infection but can't take any time off work) and I know I can use decongestants such as sudafed, but can I use Olbas Oil, Vicks and the like? I am desperate for some relief!

Have googled and tried usual places such as Kellymom and Drugs in Breastmilk, but can't find a definite answer. Thanks

Why would you not be able to have it? In understand oral decongestants and breastfeeding but surely this is absolutely fine. You'll have v good supply at 11 mo as well. Get well soon.

I don't know to be honest, but the Olbas website says to ask your GP if you are bf, and have found other posts on the internet to say it's a no. I know medicines often say this, but if it was clearly ok then it just wouldn't mention bf at all on the packet, surely? I like to be sure incase there is something I hadn't thought of. Thanks Smile

I used it when I was breastfeeding- in fact dd was about 11 MO the same. We're both still here to tell the tale!

You can have strepsils and similar too.

Pretty much nothing says safe when pregnant/breastfeeding on it. It's fine though, your baby could use olbas oil Grin

Use Karvol. It's suitable for babies.

Ideally check with a pharmacist, or use the one ok for babies and children. When I was (early) pregnant the pharmacist told me not to use stuff containing camphor as potentially risky to baby, no idea if grown up olbas oil contains this! I am pretty sure I used it before christmas (baby about 11m at the time) and she is still here. I thought it said ok to use on babies over 6m so assumed it was ok… I might be nervous with e teeny tiny one though.

Also, for maximum relief steam your face (with olbas, eucalyptus or whatever) its horrid, will make your eyes stream and your lungs burn. Then squirt saline up your nose whilst sniffing (available in a handy squirty bottle from boots, will make your eyes stream more, and is akin to a backward roll underwater).

get well soon

To be honest I was definitely using decongestants like sudafed as a one off by the time DS was 11 months. Your supply is well established by then so a temporary reduction in supply isn't going to be a big problem.
