Breast lump

I woke with a hard lump on Monday. It's nearer the edge where my bra sits and it's quite hard. Drs given me antibiotics but still not going. I've tried to massage with hot flannels and have hot baths and showers but mines still not going. Feeding lots on that side and expressing too to relieve it. Am sore on that side but no redness. Worried its something serious now as dr said she would refer me to breast consultant if not gone and have to go back tomorrow!!

Just after advice really. Sad

Been to drs and saw a different one today. He is sure it's a blocked duct and said they wouldn't normally refer this early to be seen my breast consultant. Going back in 10 days if new antibiotics don't work to get checked but he said it feels and looks like a blocked duct.

Yay! Brilliant news for the NY.

BUT if it doesn't go away, please, please do go back and get it biopsied.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/01/2014 14:58

Excellent newsSmile

I don't think anyone has linked to the Kellymom page on blocked ducts and mastitis yet - it has lots of suggestions and may give you some other ideas to try. If it's near where your bra sits, is it possible your bra is putting some pressure in that area?

jenwa · 02/01/2014 16:47

Yes I feel a bit relieved but there is always that doubt in the back of my head. Will wait and see what happens.
Thanks for the link. Yes I don't think the feeding bra is helping. Have not worn it this week. It's quite a thick padded one and although if has no under wire it has a support band and I think when my breast fills it puts pressure on it. If I'm able to carry on feeding ok then I will go and buy some
New ones. This is a marks and Spencer's one so thought it would be pretty good. Not cheap either!!

It's hard in the first few weeks. I worked out it was better for me not to wear a bra at night but it was ages before I stopped leaking! I think I had a crop top style one from Mothercare that was comfortable.

jenwa · 02/01/2014 17:02

I've been wearing vest tops but still trying to out the pads in and keep them in place which is not always possible Shock

Really sore again tonight. Will have a hot shower in the morning and try massage again Sad. Really hoping it goes away soon!

Oh poor you. Is the lump still the same one? Have you tried just feeding from the bad side and expressing from the other to keep supply up? Expressing after each feed? Dangle feeding? Massage before each feed and after your hot shower make sure you express. Hand expressing is better. Thanks Sorry if I'm repeating stuff.

jenwa · 02/01/2014 22:06

Yes although not expressed after hot shower. Tried the dangle feed last night and he fell asleep so had to try to unlatch him and he was still latched up but asleep. It's making it hurt up to my nipple now. Have been warming one of my DDs beanies up and holding it on there. It's a big hippo! Just as it keeps the heat and gives it some
Comfort. Will try all the methods again tomorrow. Am so fed up Sad

jenwa · 02/01/2014 22:07

Oh yes sorry it's still the same lump. Been there since Sunday Sad Shock

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 02/01/2014 22:09

Oh that's a good idea. Are you taking painkillers? Keep an eye on your nipple for any white lumps. You def need to express after you massage in shower otherwise the milk has nowhere to go and it won't make any difference. They're such a pain in the arse Sad

jenwa · 02/01/2014 22:52

I'm getting anxious again that it's not a blocked duct. Worried by rubbing and pressing that it will burst or something! It won't shift at all. Trying to hand express in bed with this heated hippo on it!!

Am taking paracetomal and anti inflammatorys. On them for the c section so keeping taking them.

I used to have to press so hard I would be sobbing. Are there any bf groups near you?

jenwa · 03/01/2014 08:17

There is actually although I can't get out house much at the moment due to having c section and had infection so trying to recover from that and not able to drive. Wound still slightly open on side. Also with school holiday have my 2 daughters and my parents are taking out today so my mum would have been able to take me but she's taking kids out to panto. Was meant to see HV and get DS weighed but I can't actually get there this am. Haven't walked very far without making section too uncomfy! Did have a breastfeeding advisor come out tues and help with latching DS on but he's still not brilliant. Latched better when I am lay down.
Will
Try the massage again later. Worried if it's an abscess and it will burst Shock

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/01/2014 08:46

Try hand expressing in the shower between massaging the blocked duct. Obviously the milk can't be caught but you're doing this for your comfort not to get the milk.

Sephy · 03/01/2014 09:42

Have you tried using a nappy filled with water and zapped in the microwave to provide heat? It really helped with mine that lasted about ten days. In the end, I hired a hospital grade pump from nct and just kept pumping at that side dangled down. Never noticed the massive relief some talk about, just gradually realised what had been half a boob full of hard painful lumps was no longer there.

jenwa · 03/01/2014 13:39

Not done the nappy thing but held a hot microwave teddy against it :-)

Will try the nappy one later. It's such a pain am currently feeding on that side now. Ran a bath an hr ago but DS send to not want me to go in it Hmm

Try LLL even if it's just for reassurance? You can phone them or email your local one.

jenwa · 04/01/2014 22:25

Lump is really sore again today. Actually went out for lunch and wore a bra which I took off straight away when we got home. Pain been sore like I've been kicked in the boob. It's now red and lump seems more prominent. Don't thing the new antibiotics are working Sad going to tidy get some sleep. Dosed up on pain relief and anti inflammatories. If sore tomorrow I think I may just go to A&E in the hope they have all the equipment in hospital and may be able to do something there!!!

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 05/01/2014 07:18

Sounds like mastitis now. What antibiotics did they give you and how long for? I really would try to see a bf consultant if possible

jenwa · 05/01/2014 08:35

I'm allergic to penicillin. I'm on cephalexine. (sp)
Saw a breast feeding advisor tues but she checked how DS was latching on never looked at lump. Seeing HV tomorrow possibly.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/01/2014 08:41

To me, it didn't sound like it was infected to start with. It does now though. They can drain it for you if you can't get it cleared. I would be calling ooh or going to a walk in centre though because you really need the infection sorted. My friend has been on antibiotics for four weeks now for it Shock hope you don't feel too ill Thanks
