Just needed a place to rant.

After successfully establishing breastfeeding with my now 3 week old - and loving every exhausting minute of it - I now have a horrendous thrush infection. Gone from pain free to agony. GP appointment at 3pm today but going mad in the meantime.

Boobs feel so hot inside (but not to touch), stabbing prickling pain from nipple radiating out, chest pain and now back pain. Nipples are actually ok as is his mouth so this has to be a deep infection... Had raging vaginal thrush pre birth so obviously have a problem.

Aaaahhhh I want to cut my boobs off.

You poor thing. Get the Daktarin gel for lo and cream for you and tablets. Breast feeding network has a factsheet with all the details. Hope you get sorted soon.

Dr was classic... I know nothing but will prescribe anyway...

Daktarin oral gel for him - lovely, that makes sense
Daktarin oral gel for my nipples - wtf? Not the cream? Because nipples and mouths are so similar.
One off dose of flucanazole for me.... Not a course.

She didn't bother to look up anything... Grr... I can't imagine this will shift anything but will give it a couple of days then go back. My fault for not having a printer to take the bfn leaflet with me.

I had thrush early on. The gels helped as did the fluclonazole. I also had what they thought was vaginal thrush but turned out to be post partum vaginitis.

Thrush wise to really knock it on the head, I boil washed anything milky - bras, muslins, bath towels abd changed them daily. I dried my boobs with kitchen towel after a shower. Air dry as much as poss and don't use antibacterial soap.

Are you sure it's not mastitis?

LadyMedea · 31/12/2013 19:14

No redness, heat or flu feeling. Both sides, shooting pain made worse after feeds and at night... Definitely ductal thrush as it fits everything I've read.

Symptoms still v bad... Pain down arms and back. Will be going back on 2nd.

I think I'm a bit unusual as I have almost no nipple symptoms, it's all in the breasts, but it does happen

God it sound awful. I really feel for you. Try and print some info out on thrush treatment and take it along to the GP. My local BFing cafe suggested I did this to get a longer course of fluclonazole prescribed. They weren't happy but did do it.

LadyMedea · 31/12/2013 22:36

Yes going to try that technique... Wasn't fully prepared last time.

Also found the prescribing guidelines on the NICE CKS site cks.nice.org.uk/breastfeeding-problems#!scenariorecommendation:8

Which should be even more persuasive than the (identical) bfn guidelines... Surely they can't argue with NICE?
