Poo question

My baby is 8wo and EBF. He poos loads, maybe 6/7 plus times a day. Now we've had nothing for 40 hours or so. Is that normal?

My 7wo only poos once every day or 2 so this would be normal for me, but I think I would be concerned if she had went from 6/7 poos a day to none in a whole day? Its probably nothing and totally normal mind you. I remember being concerned as dd1 also pooed very infrequently but HV told me that some babies just don't poo that much.

After around 5 weeks, some exclusively breastfed babies go from being frequent pooers to skipping a few days and the change can happen quite suddenly. It can be normal for exclusively breastfed babies at 8weeks to poo once every 3-4 days or even less frequently than that. Dr Jack Newman reports a happy healthy baby going once every 21 days (but I bet he was a bit uncomfortable the day before). It isn't constipation provided once he does go, the stool is soft. It also doesn't mean he's full of poo. Breastmilk is relatively bioavailable and some babies produce little waste.

If he's still getting his 6 wet nappies in 24 hours and otherwise is feeding and behaving normally, I wouldn't worry.

I don't post much on here but know firsthand how worrying it can be as we have a 9 week old DD. We too went from v frequent poos to having none for 72hrs. I was giving her infacol at the time, and worrying it was constipating her I stopped it and she righted herself very quickly. I don't think she was constipated.

She has missed days since but now does 1-2 a day. If you're worried I'd see your GP but I don't think this is unusual.

DD1 did this and she didn't poo for 15 days! BM contains no waste at all so she is using all you put in her but so [repare yourself for POONAMI when he does go. As long as you are getting plenty of wet nappies it will come eventually and when you are least prepared! :)

It came, oh boy Shock poonami indeed. Thanks for the advice everyone x
