Mastitis advice please

I began getting discomfort during feeds last Thursday which initially I thought was due to a dodgy latch from teething. Overnight it became really painful to feed & my milk was a very light pink colour. Friday morning my nipple, areola & a small amount of breast were slightly red so went straight to my gp who prescribed antibiotics. By Friday night I had a temperature with shivers & a pounding head. Saturday the redness had spread massively & I was feeling more than a little rough with it being very painful to feed. Saturday night I went to the emergency doctors as it was clear the antibiotics weren't working. They have put me on a combination of 2 antibiotics at a much higher dose (1000mg 4 times a day). I managed to fit in 2 lots of that Saturday night thanks to night feeds & obviously had the full whack yesterday. My temperature now seems to be under control.

Last night my nipple, which was fine prior to this apart from a small milk blister that wasn't causing me any bother, looks almost grazed & slightly bruised & is very dry??? I hand expressed a string of fatty gunky milk which came from where the milk blister is & the red patch is no better. Feeding is still painful, though not quite so toe curling, but I can feel a sharp, almost tugging sensation deep in my breast when he feeds.

Is this normal for mastitis or do I need to go back to the doctors? I had mastitis with ds1 & it wasn't quite like this (or at least I don't it being!)

Keep feeding, feeding, feeding to keep the milk flowing through. If you feel the red patch becoming hard or not improving, get back to the GP who may refer you for an ultrasound to check for an abscess. This happened to me over a series of excruciating weeks trying to massage out what I was told was a blocked duct, and was actually a huge abscess. And also try to rest as much as you can, rest is a wonderful healer (rally the troops!).

Feed as much as possible and I would also hand express in the bath.
The stingy bits are just blocked milk. It's good the are coming out.

Mastitis is bloody awful.Thanks

Cabbage leaf fresh from the fridge helped ease the pain.

Merry bloody Christmas

Owch and could still mean blockages in that particularly duct so I might try expressing in the bath again. If you are not adverse to supplements lecithin can seem to help some mums with mastitis.
