Breast feeding and medications

I've been breast feeding pretty much constantly for years and years and years and I've never experienced this problem before but I had my 6 week postnatal check up with a new doctor yesterday and as we were talking I mentioned to her that I have a fungal nail infection on my big toe.

I've been treating it for about 3/4 years with the nail paint stuff and its not working now my big toe gets swollen and so itchy it nearly drives me insane I was hoping she would give me something better to deal with it but she won't.

No tablets not even any cream to make the skin stop being sore and her justification was because I'm breast feeding I can't take or use anything and her advice was I should leave it untreated.

Is this a new thing? Surely it can't be right there must be something better than the OTC stuff that you can use when breast feeding, other than going to see a private gp how do I find out?

I don't know anything about this specific problem, but I think drug companies are so cautious that practically everything is not recommended when breastfeeding.

When I needed some medication while breastfeeding the GP looked up details of all the drugs available and information about why they were not recommended when breastfeeding and exactly what the risks were. Then I could make a more informed choice about whether to take something or not. You might be able to find this info online yourself, or maybe your GP could help.

If all of your other DC are ok, then it's probably fine to at least keep using what you were before.

There is a really good service offrred by the Breastfeeding Network. They have a trained pharmacist who knows about medications and breastmilk. There must be something you can use, especially given you can treat infants with oral antifungals for thrush...

At my gps surgery they have a book, medications and the bf mother. See if your gp surgery has something like that?
