Very sore nipple

My right nipple feels as though the baby is sucking knives through it. She's 11 weeks old and feeding has never been painful before. It's been getting progressively worse through the day, and I had to switch her to the other side just now because it was too painful to continue.

Any idea what might be causing it or what I can do? I've rubbed it with milk and am sitting here with it out!

Is it just the one side? Any pain after the feed, or just during?
Do you think your baby might have latched a bit awkwardly in the night and caused you some soreness?

It is just the one side, and was still sore after the feed but not as painful. That could be it. Hope that's all it is. I've been really lucky with feeding so far. I'm wondering about asking DH to give her a bottle of expressed milk later to give it a rest. I might have to express to relieve pressure though - might that make it worse? I'll see how it goes.

Yes, you'll probably need to remove milk from that side if you are not going to feed from -perhaps hand expression would be gentler than a pump?
