Did you Breastfeed while pregnant?

I don't know anyone who has. I think I am pregnant (showing all the signs but too early to take a test) and I have a 10 month old who I don't intend to stop BFing any time soon

Over the last week my nipples have got very sore. I am finding it rather painful to feed. Especially since she likes bouncing around while feeding.

Is this normal and does it stop?

Hello mrsmartin, yes I did, and continued to tandem feed, though DD1 was just 3 when DD2 was born so wasn't feeding much during early pregnancy, and was only asking once a day once DD2 was born.

I remember me and DD1 going through a whole load of phases when pg - my breasts were tender mid-pg so sometimes I had to cut feeds short (much to DD1s disgust) and as my shape changed, so our feeding position changed, so I had to go back to paying attention to latch (yeah, right, THAT's easy with a 2yo) or I started to get sore. I know also that my supply dropped a bit (though not enough to bother DD1) but that meant longer feeds, which sometimes also meant I got a bit sore just through exposure.

As your firstborn is much younger, you don't have the opportunity to discuss options with her, but might it be possible to encourage quieter, calmer feeding so she doesn't hurt you? Maybe a nursing necklace to keep her focused towards you and reduce distractions and painful nipple yanking?! Or positioning something so she can see something fascinating just beyond your shoulder and doesn't want to do acrobatic nursing? I discovered a playcentre that had the usually-loathed silent TV on at just the right angle that I could feed DD1 and she could see the screen, and would just lie still! Hardly textbook parenting but if it gave my nips a break, hell I was going to do it.

Good luck. There's a book called Adventures in Tandem Nursing (?) that deals with bfing while pg as well as nursing 2, which is quite good to dip in to for a bit of reassurance. I borrowed it from a local NCT counsellor, and I know some libraries have it.

I'm doing the same and am currently 24 weeks. DD is 15 months so older than yours but she does feed a lot still. I think she's increased her feeding actually and I think my milk supply is drying up a bit. She keeps swapping sides in a way she didn't before and pointing in a slightly outraged way to the other breast before swapping!

Initially I didn't notice many of the breast changes I had with my first pregnancy though and in general they have been less sore than last time. I don't think they altered much at all to think they are getting a bit bigger again now though. It was perhaps a little more sore to breastfeed initially but not so bad at the moment.

I'm planning to tandem feed too as DD doesn't look like giving up any time soon.

Hi, I was still breastfeeding my dd when I was pregnant - I stopped when I she was 14 months old and I was about 4/5 months pregnant as I didn't want to tandem feed - mu nipples were really sore for about 2/3 weeks I think so it doesn't last forever!

CosmicDespot · 01/12/2013 00:00

Yes, I fed DD till she was 15mo and I was 5mo pregnant. I don't remember any problems, but it was 3 years ago. Lansinoh? Would something like that help? I hope it passes soon.

I'm wondering the same! 8 weeks pg, still feeding 21 month DD. My nipples hurt! She bit me hard in her sleep this morning too. I'm considering quitting as I don't want to tandem feed either, but I'm not really sure how to go about it. She's still a total boob monster.

Yes I started off my pregnancy feeding DD, but she stopped of her own accord in the second trimester. I can't remember exactly when. I think my milk supply must have dried up or the taste changed. By then we were just feeding morning, naptime and bedtime when I wasn't working. I didn't encourage her to stop in any way but I must admit that I was relieved!

DeathMetalMum · 01/12/2013 20:48

Yes I fed until about 5/6 months while I was prrgnant with dd2. Dd1 was 22months by the time we finished. I was very much ready but dd needed some encouragement - though not much. Tandem feeding certainly wasn't for me not sure if I would have felt different if dd1 was younger though.

FlatsInDagenham · 01/12/2013 20:54

Yes I fed my 3yo while pregnant and had lots of changes - sometimes sore, sometimes no milk coming, etc.

I stopped when I was 6 months pregnant when I just found it too uncomfortable. My 3yo accepted it without a problem, but was probably ready to stop too.

Yes I bf whilst pregnant. Nipples were very sore. I sometimes felt antsy like my skin was crawling whilst feeding (this is very common). However, I suppose I just got used to it and we carried on throughout.

Tandem fed afterwards (worth feeing in pregnancy for).

StealthPolarBear · 01/12/2013 20:59

Yes, I fed older DS until DD was 18 months. Nipples were sore but got better slowly after giving births. Latch difficult with a huge bump - be aware of that!
