How much baby rice?

LittleMilla · 26/11/2013 20:16

Just started giving DS2 ( months) some babyrice at about 5pm. Tried it last Friday to see if he was ready and he LOVED it.

He's bf aside from a ff dreamfeed. Used formula to mke it up but not sure how much to give him? He'l happily take rice mixd with 3oz of milk...but I am worried about too much too soon. Was surprised he's taken it so well and it's improved his sleep, although I know I shouldn't say this.

He's having 5 bfs a day and one at 4am ish

Not much. It's not very nutritious. What about an egg yolk? S

ilovepowerhoop · 26/11/2013 20:18

how old? I would normally give foods early in the day in case there is a reaction that would affect sleep. A few weaning spoons full is normally enough to start with

LittleMilla · 26/11/2013 20:31

Stupid keypad locked out, he's only 4.5 months.

Planning to just keep him on this for a few weeks before attempting 'proper' weaning. He's having it in addition to, rather instead of, his normal food.

Just cannot remember anything from DS1 Confused and hadn't really planned to start this soon. Just stupidly messed around last week and it seemed to help with sleep Shock.

yuck. Don't give him wallpaper paste. Wait until 6 months and then give him everything.

Hungry babies need nutritious calories.

LambChopsRarePlease · 27/11/2013 22:11

How much baby rice?

None.

BikeRunSki · 27/11/2013 22:13

this and the one above .

duchesse · 27/11/2013 22:15

Baby rice is terrible stuff. The only thing that gave DS constipation since he was naturally rather inclined in the other direction. I gave him some about 4 times, then stopped. Wasn't worth it. Never used it with any other child. Filthy stuff. I think I had been brainwashed into thinking that's what babies ate. According to DS at 5.5 mo, what babies ate was what was on our plates. So that's what he had instead.

ThisIsMeNow · 27/11/2013 22:16

It doesn't have any nutrition in it so it's not doing him any 'good' from a food point of view.
Maybe he needs more milk at night to help him sleep better? Could you increase his dream feed bottle? Or give an extra bf before bed and see if that helps? He'd get more nutrition from that.

gwenniebee · 27/11/2013 22:20

Don't want to appear "judgy" - your baby etc etc, but - he doesn't need baby rice at 4.5 months. He needs milk, with all its nutrients, and then he needs proper, flavoursome food from much nearer 6 months. Have you tasted the baby rice?! Eugh.

Fairylea · 27/11/2013 22:23

I've never given either of mine baby rice and I'm what some might call a traditional weaner (puree then gradually larger lumps rather than baby led weaning).

Personally I think baby rice is pretty tasteless, if you wait till 6 months there are lots more interesting flavours to be had!

jammiedonut · 27/11/2013 22:27

There's really no need for baby rice, especially at 4.5 months, it can play havoc with their digestion. I'd wait til 6 months if you could hold off, so much more variety in terms of flavours and textures.

jammiedonut · 27/11/2013 22:29

*didnt mean to sound judgy, just thought you wouldn't have to worry about how to make it up if you didn't use it!

ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight · 27/11/2013 22:31

Isn't there a problem with baby rice ATM? Amounts of poison - arsenic I think

bellablot · 27/11/2013 22:33

Never saw the point in baby rice, what a waste if time and energy. It won't help your DS sleep better either, if anything it will disturb his sleep if he gas a reaction. 4.5 months is too early to wean, wait until 6-7 months and they can eat 'proper' things using their own fingers then they decide what to eat.

Debs75 · 27/11/2013 22:33

NONE

There is no nutritional value to baby rice for such a young baby, he would be much better having breastmilk till 6 months and then try baby led weaning with him. With BLW you can stay away from nasty pre digested baby jars and packets. There has been some debate recently that commercial baby food is no good for babies.

Sorry that might be not what you asked for but you did ask and this is my opinion

LittleMilla · 28/11/2013 13:46

Forgot how much ppl on mn hate baby rice. Silly me.

ThisIsMeNow · 28/11/2013 14:04

It's up to you what you give your child but if you ask for opinions, you'll get them. Especially here.

LittleMilla · 28/11/2013 14:15

I am chuckling, seriously. I've been on mn for long enough to know that even if you ask for advice, you get opinions.

I'd just genuinely forgotten that baby rice, along with fruit shoots etc are on the mn list of banned substances Wink

tweetytwat · 28/11/2013 14:17

you did askHmm
why fill them up with something nutritionally worthless? If you must give food so early, and I would suggest that it's not necessary, then fruit and veg purees can be given. Both of which are very low calorie and will be filling the baby up instead of energy dense milk.

Andcake · 28/11/2013 14:21

is there a reason why you are not going with guidelines to wean at 6 mo - reflux etc - as that might govern it - what does HV or dr say.
i am in the no to baby rice camp as well no nutrition so a waste of money

clairikins · 28/11/2013 15:50

at 4 months a baby needs milk. That is all. Baby rice has no nutritional value and prevents them having milk which does. That's not being opinionated that's fact. I really don't know why people buy that crap. If you are going to give them rice give them normal rice when they are ready

nearlyreadytopop · 28/11/2013 21:46

Not an opinion a fact. In comparison to bm baby rice is nutrionally poor.

VomitingVeronica · 29/11/2013 20:51

Weaning at 4 months isn't the devil, it's even advised in some cases, although I will admit that baby rice bemuses me. Dd has the Plum 4 grain porridge (quinoa, brown rice, amaranth and millet, so far she likes it. She doesn't react well (reflux) to fruits but can tolerate a little bit with the porridge, much more than with the baby rice I have tried when we ran out. I would much rather dd had this than the empty calories of baby rice.

VomitingVeronica · 29/11/2013 20:52

Ps when she started weaning she took 0.5oz, now 1.5oz a month in, your lo is doing very well!
