Am I missing something - what do you do with your pump??

I've read about pumping at numerous stages during the day and topping up a the milk storage pot across the day.

  • so what do you do with the pump? I can't imagine people would sterilise it after each use, I realise people pump at work and surely you wouldn't have the facilities to do this. Also where do you store your pump when it's not in use.

I also have an ebm question. Can you keep the milk for a day or two in the fridge before freezing it or do you have to freeze ASAP after expressing.

Do people's personal experiences go against guidelines.

Thanks!

I only pump once a day in work, so I don't really need to do anything with it - I leave the sort of machinery bit of the pump in work (have it in a fabric shoe bag) and bring in a little cool bag every day with a freezer block, a clean empty bottle, and the clean coney bit/valve of the pump. Pump, stick the coney bit and bottle back in the bag, stick bag in the fridge in work, bring it home with me at the end of the day, put full bottle in fridge, put pump bits in dishwasher (apparently a hot dishwasher is enough for cleaning with an older baby).

Anyone I know who pumps multiple times a day just washes the cone bit out in the kitchen/bathroom and puts it in a little plastic bag for next use. I presume you could use a microwave sterilizer but I don't think it'd be necessary.

Pretty sure you can leave milk in the fridge for a day or so before freezing, I've certainly done it myself and I can't think why it'd be a problem, it's not going to have gone off.

When I pumped, I rinsed it out with cold tap water after I was done, and then would sterilise at the end of each day. I pumped up to 6 times a day.
I didn't pump at work - but I know some pumps come with bags, so I guess you would store in a bag in the allocated pumping room?

I never froze milk, but would have filled up a pot throughout the day, and then froze what was in that pot.
