Nipples being pulled through nipple shields

Hi

I am breastfeeding my 8 week old baby using nipple shields as he will not latch on without them (and never has). We keep trying without but he doesn't seem able. He has had a tongue tie snipped at 2 weeks, couldn't use shields either before that so he was bottle fed.

Basically in the last week or so he has started pulling my nipple through the holes at the end of the shield which is very painful and I worry may reduce the amount of milk as the nipple must be pressed right against the end of the shield.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do about it? We are using large Medela shields and a new pair hasn't helped!

Thanks

That's a tricky one. Maybe try with a different brand of shield, as hopefully the holes at the end will be different?

To lure him to feed without the shield, people often recommend trying at different times, midway through a feed, when he is sleepy, etc etc.

Ow poor you! He must have an awesome suck. My DS is also 8 weeks and I feed exclusively using shields. What brand do you use? I've only ever used medela but another brand might be better. Is he a frantic feeder? If so it might help to feed him before he gets too worked up? I can't think of any more suggestions, but you have my sympathy and I'm sure your DS will still be getting enough milk.
