What do people/places feel they can tell you to breastfeed discreetly?

Hi,

My friend has been to Haymarket shopping centre in Leicester today. She went into the baby changing rooms only to be met with a sign which said 'As this is a unisex changing room please use discretion if breast feeding'. She said 'It was a horrid little room with just enough space to do a change, a sink and a crappy plastic chair. I would have rather fed standing up in the middle of the shopping centre than in there'.

Why are people so offended by breastfeeding?! I mean there's more boob shown on telly before the watershed than there when I breastfeed. Is it any wonder people are put off from breastfeeding! Shame on you Haymarket Shopping Centre!

Agree. Your friend would have been much better somewhere comfortable.

If in leics DEFO use john Lewis feed room light airy free water comfy seats and no patronising signs

LostMySocks · 21/11/2013 22:52

might just have been a warning as some womenmight not want to feed in front of men

I hope your friend has contacted the shopping centre management to object to the sign, perhaps also to suggest alternative wording. Then the shopping centre have a chance to improve their service and hopefully other women won't get put off by this.

All they need to do is to change the notice to 'this is a unisex changing room'....then women who don't want men to be around can choose.

No need for the off-putting and judgy 'discretion' addtion :( Angry

Some public toilets have a notice saying 'male cleaners sometimes care for these toilets' so women know there might be a man there, and he is permitted to be there. Same thing, really.

I fed anywhere, our local tesco has mothers room which is ok for changing your baby in but a bit grim for bf, so I used to then go in the cafe, in full view of the world through big glass window and the all the oul ones sitting having their morning cuppas.
