Newborn only feeding for five mins?

DS is a week old and I'm bf on demand. Loads of wet and dirty nappies but he never feeds for longer than five mins at a time and sometimes goes for three hours between feeds.

Is this normal? DD used to feed for longer at this stage. Could he just be efficient/ I have a fast let down?

Anyone else have/had a super fast feeder at this age?

Mine did and still does same. So long as yr getting the nsppies dont worry! If they are green, feed from the one breast for two or three feeds then next breast etc

Mine did this as a newborn too - he soon hit a growth spurt and fed more frequently, but still for short amounts of time. I felt worried about this, but he put on plenty of weight, and produced plenty of wet and dirty nappies. He's now (six weeks) feeding for slightly longer, but still only about ten mins on average.

I've recently noticed that milk carries on spraying out of me, even after he's broken latch, so I assume that he's getting a really big mouthful in the first few minutes - perhaps the same is true for you? Nappies and weight gain are, I think, pretty much your best indicator.

Mine did this. She very occasionally did closer to 10, she's always been efficient really. Some good old cluster feeding in the evenings but generally 5 mins. She's only just started going 3 hours between feeds though and she's 6 months old!

I had to check this wasn't my thread from 12weeks ago :)
My ds was the same. I had a big supply and fast letdown and he fed fast. Do you get lots of milk out easily when expressing? I did.

I think I had a bit of a foremilk imbalance for a while as he wasn't staying on long enough - he got windy, occasional green poos and fed every 2hrs - but it sounds like you don't have that for now.

Yep I had this too. Most feeds 5-7 mins. I had oversupply and crazy letdown.

Make the most of it!

Brilliant - exactly the kind of replies I was hoping for. I will definitely make the most of it...
