Ameda Lactaline- What settings do you use?

First post on Mumsnet- normally I just lurk and read other people's answers, but I couldn't find a good answer to this one.

I've had problems with milk supply, so was given an electric breast pump by the midwifes. But it turned out the flanges were far too big for me (never knew I had smaller than average nipples before now... Blush ) . So I bought myself an electric pump that I knew I could get smaller flanges for. Went for the Ameda Lactaline after reading mumsnet reviews.

My question is, how do you use the two dials to get the best results? I've tried turning the speed to high to get a let down, but when I turn it down afterwards the mik all stops flowing. Sure theres a knack to this i'm missing somewhere. I know everyone settings will be different, but I'm looking for a starting point.

It's just trial and error really. I used to have both on quite high and then gradually turn the speed dial down until the milk squirts were roughly the same length as the suck. Then when that stopped I'd ramp up the speed again to try and trigger a second let down. The suction is more important than the speed once milk is flowing IME.

Thanks. :) I'll go and watch the funnel like a hawk and see if I can do that. I don't really get squirting out milk, it more drips slowly :( I think it's a low supply thing.
