White nipples/painful

Hi I have a 5 month DS who is ebf. Everything has been going well apart from a bout of mastitis a few weeks ago which was treated with antibiotics.
Over the last few days I have been getting a very sore nipple only on the right side, it feels like DS is really clamping down, during the feed I have a burning pain and then afterwards my nipple is white and is painful for quite a while after.
What do you think this could be? I don't want to stop breastfeeding as I'd like to keep going until DS is 1yr but at the moment I'm dreading feeding.
I'd be grateful for any advice

Sounds like it could be thrush.

Yes my nipple is a bit of funny shape when it comes out of his mouth. The pain is less if I hold my breast when I'm feeding him, so I'm wondering if it's how he's latching on. He seems to not be opening his mouth as wide as he used to and really clamping on -I wondered if this was because he might be teething.
I'm not really sure about thrush- what symptoms do you get with it?

If your nipple is coming out a funny shape (sometimes a bit flat or pinched?) it could be the latch... I'm certainly no expert but the symptoms you're describing are exactly what I had! I was misdiagnosed thrush by a dr and didn't want to take the meds so paid for a private lactation consultant and was best thing I ever did!

Once she sorted my latch, no more pains during of after feeding (burning after for me was when blood is rushing back to nipple). Now I know when I've got a good latch because as well as no pain, my nipple comes out huge and asymmetrical, (like it looks when I use an electric pump actually).

As I said...I'm certainly no expert but before taking any thrush treatments I would def explore the latch first.

I've had a look at the linked page and I think it is to do with the latch. I think we have got a bit lazy and he hardly opens his mouth when latching on.
Today I have been making sure he opens his mouth really wide and it definitely hasn't been as painful.
I don't think its thrush but I will keep an eye on things.
