We've been introducing our 9-week old BF DS to one bottle of formula a day over the last few weeks (to preserve my sanity and increase the chances of me continuing to bf!). We give him the bottle in the evening when he cluster feeds and he's a frequent feeder during the day, so my supply hasn't been noticeably affected by dropping one feed.
DP does the bottle feed, so LO is not looking for my boobs. Results have been mixed, but one thing he's discovered is that DS is by far happiest taking a bottle when lying flat on his back with his head turned to one side. Basically, everything the official advice says you're not supposed to do! Incidentally this position is often how he ends up when I bf him in bed first thing in the morning, as we're both half asleep and he wriggles. He always seems happy like that, gives us smiles, doesn't choke etc, but also I've read it can increase the chance of ear infections.
Are we being really irresponsible by allowing him to feed like this if he's happy?
