DS won't take expressed bottle. Help!!

AnyFuckerWillDo · 28/10/2013 22:48

For various reasons I would like my DS to be able to take an expressed bottle. My DD took an expressed bottle from 4 weeks without any bother.
Can anyone give me any tips, I've tried different times of the day, different brands of teat tommie tippee, avent, dr.brown. Different members of the family giving the bottle n nothing works. He just gets so upset n I have to go back to BF.
I adore BF and have no plans to stop until he's at least 6 months but the thought I'm not gonna get any help with feeding for the next 4/5 months is Hmm.

Absolutely fine, why do you want help. BFing is easy, you sit on the sofa with the TV on or you lying bed and snooze.

DH, Gets to cook, fill dishwashers and do the laundry.

Feeding was definitely the one baby related job I was glad I couldn't delegate.

Have you tried varying the temp of the milk? I have just spent a very painful 2 weeks weaning dd2 onto formula (whole other thread) but she likes the milk way hotter than advised and once we got the temp right she is now exclusively on bottles like a pro & she is 6 months old.

AnyFuckerWillDo · 29/10/2013 04:43

Oh it's not that, I know how brilliant it is it's just that I want go option of being able to leave the house without him! Just go make plans really, Xmas party from work, Christmas markets n shopping with best friend, etc etc. feel selfish saying I want freedom because I don't but I need the option of a few hours off.

Thanks knittingnovice I will try it abit warmer. Hate seeing all this BM go to waste, once it's warmed and he doesn't take it it has to be binned Confused very frustrating

We had the same with DS. We just kept trying different bottles. In the end we managed it get him to take a Nuk one with the very smallest hole - it's actually designed for tea, not milk (in Germany where giving babies tea is normal apparently). I think my flow must we quite slow so he needed something similar. It's rubbish spending money on so many different ones though. Good luck!

NoisyBrain · 29/10/2013 05:35

Watching with interest as we're having the same issue with our 8 week old ds. I too am intending to carry on bf for the majority of feeds, but also have an xmas do I'd like to attend! It definitely seems to be a teat issue with ds (currently trying TT). No. 1 seemed to be too slow, no.2 possibly too fast and we've had mixed results with vari-flow.

A friend advised me to be consistent for several feeds before deciding something doesn't work and trying something else, ie. same bottle type, same teat, same time of day, same person (DP in our case, so baby is not looking for my boob). It's difficult though isn't it? I hate hearing ds get frustrated and upset.

NUK worked for bottle refusing dd1 too. The hole is at the top of the teat not the end, so she had it pump, rather than suck the milk out which mimics BFing.

Good luck.

Iwaswatchingthat · 29/10/2013 05:52

Had to pump

AnyFuckerWillDo · 29/10/2013 07:57

Thanks will try nuk

So spent £15 on a medulla bottle and teat that seems to kinda drip milk into his mouth. Thought if try it during day then he's not as tired so no such luck, he hated it. I'll go and waste more money on the NUK one tomorrow.

Hmm Getting worried now

I remember the feeling! NUK very likely to work though.

Clarina · 29/10/2013 19:17

Another vote for Nuk - latex teat, small feed hole. Worked straight away. Couldn't get them in M'care so had to order from the Nuk website. Good luck.

Iwaswatchingthat · 29/10/2013 19:19

I got mine at our tiny local chemist! Weird cos it hardly sells anything. Must have been fate!!!!

AnyFuckerWillDo · 29/10/2013 19:24

Thanks I'll look in boots tomorrow and have everything crossed. If not I'll order online x

try borrowing bottles from friends instead of buying them?

WifeofGru · 29/10/2013 19:39

Nuk latex worked for my DD1. DD2would take milk from any old brand bottle.

Orchardbeck · 29/10/2013 19:51

I've tried almost every bottle currently on the market along with latex teats, my dd2 didn't take to the NUK ones at all, even after the lactation nurse and Health visitor recommended them (we tried latex and silicone). What we did have success with was the Playtex Nurser with drop ins (try amazon) with the latex teat, (I bought the original version which looks weird but comes with latex, the new one has silicone as standard but I have both now) but then now she is ok with the MAM anti colic bottles - not brilliant, but she will drink out of them.

I always thought the MAM ones looked a bit ridiculous, but then I got one and was really impressed with the quality and design!

She will only take it from me at the moment, but I'm hoping that will change as we get more used to the bottle as part of her bedtime routine, then we can work on adding in more feeds.

NoComet · 29/10/2013 21:25

I can't express and DD wouldn't touch a bottle so freedom just had to wait until she was seven months old and she's drunk dilute squash from a cup, eat yoghurt and go to bed for DH.

Christmas shopping a fine, you just take the pushchair. Lots of sparkly decorations. Even DD2, who was the least obliging was ok at Christmas.

DD1 would go shopping all day, no bother, except if you stopped to try in clothes. Then she grumped, but if the view kept changing she was far better than stuck at home.

Strangely at 12 & 15 this hasn't changed DD2 still gets bored first.

smirnoff861 · 29/10/2013 21:30

My baby will not have bottles of expressed milk, will just not have it regardless of how we try and what we try but gulps down bottles of formula so I now mix feed a little bit, mainly still bf. You maynot want to try it, I only have now he's nearly 6 months old but just thought id add my experiences!

AnyFuckerWillDo · 29/10/2013 21:33

Strange Smirnoff, would rather not but if needs must, I need to work next Friday afternoon :( I'll try NUK first x

Any joy today?

AnyFuckerWillDo · 30/10/2013 22:49

Hi I was, won't to boots n they don't have nuk, 2 other brands claiming to be natural as close to bf but they looked like normal tears so didn't spend the money. Ordered NUK online n waiting for infantcaredirect to get back to me about a kit.
He took a very unsettled oz today off a friend...
