How much do I feed my baby?

Can somebody please advise me on how much to feed my 2 week old? I've been giving him 50ml which was advised by the hospital when I had him, he is just under 6LB now as he was a small birth weight. The 50ml doesn't seem to be satisfying him anymore. But how much is too much? I'm worried about over feeding him. Thankyou. Smile

Sam, what does your midwife or HV say? Small birthweight babies do need especially individualised care, and the amount of milk needed will depend on how often he feeds, whether there is any 'catch up' required, and how well he has been gaining.....it's much safer for you to ask the HCPs, though of course people on mumsnet can offer their experience. It might not apply to you or your baby, though :)

Maybe give the HV a call tomorrow?

I would ask for advice. DS was prem/ low birth weight and started out on formula. We were increasing the amount by 5ml daily.

I had my baby 18 daya ago and have had massive issues with wrong information with regards to feeding. from different midwives.

I couldn't breastfeed. .didnt produce any colostrum or milk. my baby didnt feed for the first 27 hours I was reakly worried and concerned but the midwives at the hospital said there was nothing to worry about. in the end they eventually and reluctantly gave me formula. they told me no more than 30 ml at a time.

when we got home I bought aptamil as I had done lots of reading and found that majority of babies seem to get on with this best. we stuck to 30ml.

at my 5 day visit I got a lot of harassment for not breastfeeding. the midwife said no more than 30ml.

our baby didnt poop for nearly 3 days we were so worried being first time parents we took her to the hospital.

the paediatrics doctor on duty was not impresses by the info the different midwives had told us and said we need to up it to 90ml. the reason baby wasnt pooping she wasn't getting enough milk and they were concerned by thr weight drop.

we have upped it to 90ml and she has pooped every day since. it also says on the aptamil box that for a newborn its approximately 90ml a feed.

I dont have any faith in midwives but that's cuz where I am they have all been rude, unhelpful and given me wrong info.

can you call your gp and ask or maybe call the midwife team at the hospital to double check?

I was told by the doctor your baby will let you know when she is full or wants more.
