Need advice re BF - both sides / wind / etc

My DD is 4 weeks. I am BF onlu. Early on due to latch probs I fed her one side only per feed - for nipple recovery.

Those issues are now resolved but unsure whether to offer DD both sides. I ask because she takes 20ish mins on one side if awake, 45ish if sleepy. The problem is she, particularly in the evenings, gets fussy on the boo and half pulls away and flails her fist. If I then offer the other side she eats and eats.

She seems to get windy and acts likeshe is hungry but if I don't regulate her (by keeping to one side) she'll keep going until she gets restless and screamy. Then she'll scream until she's thrown up.

Sorry not explaining this well! I know you can't over feed a BF baby and I'm happy to feed as much as she likes but how can I avoid over feeding when really it's wind and am I unfair to keep to one side?

Meant to say I do wind every 10-15 mins or is she gets squirmy but only do it for a burp or too as no more comes up until she's sick which can be a bit later when doing something else.

watching with intrigue as I have almost the exact same problem ... my dd will feed from one and thgen when boob goes squidgy she keeps sucking for ages but pathetic sucks but never seems to stop or will reject the boob but will still act as if she is hungry until I offer the other boob and then will puke or choke (and then puke ) and keeps acting as if she has got wind

Also watching, one side has finally recovered enough so I can offer it again but my dd (3wks) has decided she doesn't like it now
Spent an hour with my HV today getting her to latch again... desperate to empty that side as threat of mastitis always looms!

Rollermum · 25/10/2013 18:37

Rocky yes - that sounds very similar! Sorry to hear that but glad it's not just me. LO is the same - wont take herald off most of the time.

Frumps was it mastitis you were recovering from? Sounds v frustrating.

I had oversupply, and so fed DS on one side per feed until 7 months.

His feeds were usually v short but in the evening could last hours, literally. I think often he liked to suck for comfort, so if I switched him to the full side he'd end up taking on more milk than he meant to due to my oversupply and then that would cause problems. I personally think the whole "you can't over feed a BF baby" is rubbish, especially for mums with strong letdown, oversupply etc.

At 10 mo he still has really bad wind and will gag/vomit quite a bit. I try to burp him a lot and really thoroughly.

Can't help with the shouty screamy stuff biutjust wanted to say I'm currently feeding DD2 (fed DD1 till nearly 2) I only do one side at a time. Very very occasionally I change side mid feed (to block her view of sister/something) or if she's not feeding properly will offer the other Side. Sometimes she takes it and I assume she was just uncomfortable in previous position.

It's fine to just do 1 side.

Missfrumpsalot · 25/10/2013 21:02

Not mastitis thankfully but a nipple which resembled a soggy pork scratching according to DH- his way of being supportive. Jelonet and magic cream sandwich resolved it finally.
She's now.feeding happily both sides but seems to have an insaitiable hunger... DH theory this time is its gold top as its not been used in a while.

Thanks everyone.

Workberk can I ask how you know you have oversupply? Also how often do you wind during a feed, if you do?

Flibbedy thanks, good to know. How old did / will you feed til? My sister said I could do one side for now but would need two when LO is older.

Frumps ouch, that sounds painful. But what a way with words your DH has!

I had crazy engorgement but DS piled on the weight doing 5 min feeds (with a dodgy latch), v forceful letdown.

Also saw a ibclc who said she thought I did, that was when DS was 7 m

Workberk · 26/10/2013 12:06

Sorry posted by mistake, have a massive sleeping baby on me!

I had read up on it on kellymom etc and everything I read suggested oversupply too.

I've got quite good at telling when DS needs to burp now so I take my cues from that but I used to try to do it every 5 mins otherwise the air bubble gets v big and comes out with a roar/ puke!

But every baby is different.

I should point out that DS has ULT and possible PTT, untreated. I think they are responsible for his air intake but am unsure whether to operate (I'd have to go private).

Workberk · 26/10/2013 12:08

Ooh something else possibly useful - DS started biting me, as I think one boib per feed wasn't enough any more. So if in the future you encounter that, try both boobs.

Rollermum · 26/10/2013 13:21

Thanks Workberk. V useful. It definitely doesn't sound like I have an oversupply. I had heard of PTT but not ULT / just googled it. Sounds hard to deal with - it surprises me how many physical issues can interfere with breastfeeding.
