To dummy or not?

Hi, I'm after some tips re a dummy for an ebf baby. Dd is 2.5 weeks old and doing great with bf, efficient feeds and lots of wet and poo nappies plus good weight gain. However, more and more she likes to comfort suck (not feed) at the breast. Ds1 did this and it created a situation where he had to be fed to sleep everytime, I want to avoid that this time.
I'm thinking I can try a dummy with dd to satisfy the sucking desire - but which type of dummy, when, coincide with trying an expressed bottle or not, or none of the above! Any advice much appreciated.

Not an expert but at this stage 'comfort sucking' is probably helping to establish your milk supply and our could risk messing it up if you give a dummy. Is vv early still, maybe wait til 6 weeks or so?

Sorry, not v helpful. I know it's relentless my ds2 is 4 weeks and ebf, but at the same time I loved feeding ds1 to sleep!

I would say dummy would be fine.

Naturally a 0-3 months dummy.

I would wait until DD is 1 month old before introducing the dummy though. This is because your milk supply will be established plus your baby should be old enough not to go off the breast when sucking on the dummy, a some babies can be a bit funny taking the breast [not so bad with the bottle, as similar movement with the mouth] if they start the dummy too young.

So I'd say wait between 4-6 weeks to introduce the dummy to her. I'd also do the same as far as introducing expressed breast milk if you are planning to do this, as doing too early could mess up supply and/or give her nipple confusion and too late sometimes they refuse to take it. This is in general though, every baby is different.

If you can get one of those real feel dummies too that feel more similar to the texture of a breast, it might be nicer. But we had the AVENT ones since she was 4 weeks old and she's been fine with them (irt my DD, who is now 6 months old).

Sorry for waffling on hope this helps somewhat!

I wouldn't do it until 6 weeks when bfing is established

Thanks all for the advice. I had 4 weeks in my head for trying the expressed bottle so I will hold off on the dummy till then as well. I've got an avent one which came free with the 'naturally' bottles plus got some cherry teat latex ones as they were the only ones ds1 would take. Reading back my post and thinking about it more now, I'm wondering if she has had a growth spurt the last 24 hrs or so (she will be 3 weeks on tues) as she has been feeding a lot, especially cluster feeding in evening (and this morning too). I also remembered she fell asleep herself while DH was holding her so she can self settle - I think she knows already what she can get from me and no one else!
