Blood in BF babys stool - please help!

My 13 week old has had three episodes of flecks of blood in his stool. His stool has also been green an mucousy on and off for a month. I've eaten dairy since he was born, and my diet hasn't changed recently at all.

I've been advised by a paediatrician to cut out all dairy and soy from my diet.

I also have an over active let down and oversupply...

My sons very well in himself, happy feeder and gaining weight and a high percentile for age.

Has anyone had similar experience? I'm quite upset.

I've also got thrush (started at the same time as mucousy poos) and combined with this I feel my (once very happy) breastfeeding relationship is doomed.

Yes, I have experienced this, alongside the green mucousy poo (and I had over supply)

Is it little flecks of bright red blood throughout the nappy?

It happened a few times so they tested my DD for gut infections - that was clear (but she was always well in herself anyway so I wasn't surprised by that).

It ended up clearing just before I tinkered with my own diet. I honestly think the doctors think I made it up as it happened so sporadically!

In the end I dealt with the oversupply by expressing off some of the foremilk before each feed and only ever feeding from one boob each time.

My DD carried on b/feeding for months afterwards, no problems and no gut allergies so far.

Ps sorry you are upset. It's quite stressful seeing blood in your child's nappy.

In hindsight my "gut" (!) feeling is that the oversupply issue causes a lot of foremilk to be consumed, possibly slightly irritating an immature tummy. When I got the green mucousy poos under control, the blood went.

I'm sure the docs would "poo poo" (aff) this but really, they had NO explanation for it!

There is good stuff on Kellymom.com about oversupply solutions....

My DS had a very similar thing with flecks of blood. I was also advised to give up dairy (+ soya) and the bloody nappies stopped. He also now fusses less when being fed and is gaining a little more weight than before (but his gaining had nearly ground to a halt).
