Can reflux come back??? Help please

Just that really. Can symptoms of reflux come back after a period of having been gone?

Anyone know or have experience of this?

I would imagine that it could, yes, but I don't know for sure.

What's happening?

Ds2 had silent reflux which was diagnosed at 8 weeks, he had tt snipped at 14 weeks & within 1 week was off the meds, feeding & sleeping well. 3 weeks ago he had a bad cold so sleep took a huge nose dive but despite the cold having cleared up sleep is still horrendous with no improvement at all.

He was sleeping from 8/9pm ish to 3/4ish having a very quick feed then back down until 5/6ish when he would come into bed for a feed until ds1 woke up.

A typical night now is down in his cot at 8/9ish, thrashing about at 11.30 /12ish,has to be fed a cuddle with me or dh wont do,back in his cot the repeat every hour / hour & a half for the rest of the night. Sometimes just being picked up & held upright on mine or dh's shoulder does the trick but when he's put back down he's more often than not awake again crying instantly or will be within an hour until by 5ish he's in bed curled up on his side feeding on & off. He won't sleep in his cot in the day,no matter how deeply asleep when being put down he wakes crying instantly.

He is teething but had been for a while & calpol, ibuprofen, teething granules & gel have made no difference whatsoever so not convinced it's just that anymore now.

Am just at a loss as to what's upsetting him so much so wondered if it could be the reflux.

He's also bringing up clear fluid & cottage cheese type sick (sorry!) more than before.

Ab00 as far as I know symptoms of reflux can worsen when they have colds and when teething. Not sure about coming back after being reflux free and off meds. How old s your baby now?

Ds2 had terrible silent reflux as a baby, was on meds till 14m and restricted diet until 2.5. Every sodding tooth and every virus sent us straight back to the darkest days. Teething increases salivation, swallowing of acid saliva increases reflux.
Other possibility is it takes a while for the food intolerances that often underlie reflux to really get going. Worst stage for us was 4-5m old.

Reflux can come and go. It gets worse with illness or teething. It may be the same when you start weaning. Certain foods will make it worse or return too.

DS has periods if it being fine then it coming back so I tend to just keep him on the mess now. It's always ok for the first week or so, then returns.

He's just turned 26 weeks today. He was completely off his meds by about 17 weeks. We kept up with a low dose until he finished a course of cranial osteopathy. He's not fussing during feeds like he was in the early but the night wakening is which made me wonder. He has puked mid feed a couple of times which isn't really like him.

My DD had hellish reflux that improved dramatically when she reached 13 weeks old. The improvement was remarkable - she had been vomiting up to 10 times a day and it tailed off to once or twice a week. I stopped giving her ranitidine and started to forget just how terrible those early weeks were.

Anyway, she's now 18 weeks, has a nasty cold, has started teething and the reflux is back with avengence. I took her to the docs who said reflux can indeed come and go. I'm starting her back on the meds and hoping once her cold clears up it will settle down a bit.

Thanks for that Petcat, reassuring to know I may not be barking up the wrong tree after all. Sorry to hear your dd has been poorly & teething too. Any one of them on there own is bad enough but poorly, teething & reflux? It's like some kind of sick joke. I'm waiting for the punchline because it's just not funny anymore.

Ab00, this is a helpful thread for me as DS was diagnosed with silent reflux (sometimes it does involve puking) at 8 weeks, but seemed well enough not to need his Infant Gaviscon from then till about a week ago (so for three weeks). Now he's really refluxy.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but if I may ask I'm interested to know how you identified the tt connection. I've heard it can be the case but it seems hard to diagnose from what I have read.

My sympathies for your night-time sleep upset. I am having that too right now, though not quite as severely. I wondered if the thrashing were for another reason as it tends to calm significantly when I pick him up and lie him down next to me, but it sounds likely to be reflux-related going by what you are experiencing.

Ibuprufen also aggravates the stomach so (unfortunately) its best avoided for reflux babies. Its prob worsening not helping sleep even at the peak of teething... Anbesol liquid (not gel) is the best thing I've found for acute teething.
