Mixed feeding advice - poor bottle feeding technique...

By way of background, ds2 is 4.5 weeks. He struggled to breast feed from birth and moved to ebm at 3 days but bottle feeding also a struggle. I suspected tongue tie (ds1 had one) and posterior tongue tie diagnosed and cut at 12 days. He then started breast feeding with nipple shields and seems to feed quite efficiently - good weight gain, feeds 10-20 min normally every 3 hours or so.

We are trying to give an ebm dream feed using doctor brown bottles with stage 1 teats to save my sanity (no judging please!) but his bottle feeding technique seems poor. It takes almost an hour for him to take 100-120 ml. He either seems to splutter and not suck properly or sucks vigorously but hardly takes any. The tongue tie lay said it should only take 10-20 mins to take a bottle of that size including allowing him natural pauses in his drinking.

I know posterior tongue tie can reattach but presumably he'd struggle to breast feed if it was that...?

The other thing I wondered is that my supply is good with strong let down. Do you think in comparison the teat 1 is too slow - I have teat 2 but don't want to drown him...!

Any thoughts, advice appreciated.

No advice sorry, have you spoken to a BFC gurraun? Have you got the helpline numbers?

Not going to judge you at all, in fact you should give anyone who does judge you on your feeding choices an extremely big swerve.

Is DH doing the dream feed? If its you, I'd be tempted to do a bf as you can then get back to sleep more quickly. If its DH, has he read How to bottle feed the bf baby?

Thanks Jilted. It is dh doing the feed - I will show him the link.

Have you called one of the Bfing Helplines and spoken to a BFC? Smile
