Reflux, what worked for your little one?

Hi, my almost 8 week old dd has reflux, she has been started on gaviscon which helped initially but she is now vomiting and crying/ uncomfortable again. I am tempted to try anti reflux formula but not sure if I should go back to the gp first or not.

Just wondering, if you managed to get your baby's reflux under control and if so, what was it that helped? Thanks

My lo had acid reflux. Ended up on renitadene and neocate formula.

Go back to GP for some more advice xxxxxx

Dr Browns bottles and Enfamil AF formula worked brilliantly for my DD. Good luck

BrokenBananaTantrum · 18/08/2013 08:53

Enfamil AR -sorry!

TittyBojangles · 18/08/2013 08:54

Ranitidine

duende · 18/08/2013 09:21

Omeprazole and nutramigen.
Gaviscon, domperidone or any non pharmaceutical ways did nothing.
Go back to your GP.

I don't know anyone who would have success with gaviscon.

Rhubarb has she been checked for tongue tie?

You don't say how you are feeding her now, is she already on formula? Have you tried switching brands? If she is bf, have you tried one of the bfing helplines or your local bfing support group?

ShoeWhore · 18/08/2013 10:50

For us it was a combo of Gaviscon, not feeding too frequently and keeping him as upright as possible. I basically wore him about 90% of the time and when I couldn't he was as upright as I could manage in his baby bouncer.

Are you ff or bf at the moment?

I really feel for you, it's awful and I would second going back to the GP if it's not working.

Pleasenomorepeppa · 18/08/2013 10:55

Omeprezole & Aptimal Pept formula.
Definitely go back to your GP & be insistent!
Good luck Smile.

Have you considered that it may be cows milk protein intolerance?

Rhubarb78 · 18/08/2013 22:30

Thanks everyone,
She is formula fed now, aptamil first milk. She was the same on breast milk though so does that rule out cows milk protein allergy and brand issues?
I am going to get a gp appointment tomorrow and see what they say

Omeprazole and nutramigen formula work for my DD. We had to try pretty much everything and found this was the only thing that helped. Gaviscon doesn't really do much. You might have to fight to get omeprazole, we did but defiantly the best meds for reflux. Good luck!

LindsayS79 · 18/08/2013 23:02

I tried SMA stay down which was wonderful for keeping milk down however I could not get any burps and my LO was so uncomfortable with wind. I do know that a lot of people swear by it though.
Sorry to hijack but does anyone know if nutramigen formula causes trapped wind too? Reading the info on the website it sounds really similar to SMA stay down but it would be good if it doesn't cause trapped wind for my LO!

melliebobs · 18/08/2013 23:07

Ranitadene
Domoeridone
Both 3 times a day
I bf so cut out dairy

That helped to an extent but still showed symptoms till about 14 month

Rhubarb78 · 19/08/2013 10:37

Hi,did anyone start the anti reflux formula without asking the gp? The next appointment I can get is Thursday and because she is still putting on weight ok I am not sure I can ask for an emergency appointment. I am thinking of trying the formula and still going on Thursday to see if they think that's the right course of action. I have been trying to ring my hv too but can't get hold of them today either

If she's unsettled and in pain or vomiting a lot then yes you can ask for an emergency appointment she's only 8 weeks don't leave it. Push to see someone ASAP to try and help her and you. Ask to be referred to a peadiatric consultant as well really helped us. Lets us know how you get on x

chilipeppers · 19/08/2013 22:26

Hv was useless by the way. Hope yours is better! :)

redwellybluewelly · 19/08/2013 22:31

Amptimil is cows milk based.

For our DD I BF but followed a strict dairy and soya free diet. Also had Gaviscon but had to fight tooth and nail to get Omaprazole.

Ultimately what worked was time and her growing out of it. We finally stopped all reflux meds just before her third birthday. She is still unable to digest dairy and soya.

Ranitidine worked brilliantly from 8 weeks when we were prescribed it, and is still great now. I had a different baby within 3 days, no more screaming after feeds, no more puking, she was able to lay flat on her play mat. It's brilliant stuff. I also found cutting out caffeine from my diet helped a lot too, before we had the ranitidine.
It is very dose sensitive though, so you have to keep upping the dose as they gain weight or it stops working.
