Domperidone - question re dosage

DD is 7 weeks and I had latch and feeding problems early on and now slow weight gain (3-4oz per week) so I have just been prescribled domperidone at 3 x 10mg per day. Just wondering if anyone has has any success with this and what dosage you took? On some websites and forums there was talk of women taking 90mg - 120mg per day. I'm not about to take more than prescribed but can lower doses also be effective?

Also can I carry on taking fenugreek or should I stop?

I am also expressing as much as possible after a feed and doing skin to skin - both of these are mostly at night as I have a toddler DS so tend to be quite busy in the daytime.

I took up to 160mg of motillium! The weaned it down and abs down till I could eventually stop. It definitely helped me tho.

My doctor wouldnt prescribe it. Said it shouldnt be taken by breastfeeders. I was livid. Ive had to buy some but ive not started it yet because ive seen people saying they take about 90mg a day, well thats a whole packet at £5 so ive got to save and buy some more. I'll carry on with the fenugreek aswell I think.

I was prescribed it (after requesting it & pushing quite hard) when my LO started sleeping through at about 3 & half months, & consequently my supply dropped dramatically, as did his weight.

I started off at the prescribed dose (similar to yours), then upped it slightly, and it really was effective. It's tricky because if you're trying to ebf you really need immediate results, especially at just 7 weeks. But there is a danger if you take too many your boobs may over-respond after a brief time delay.

What I found was that after a week of taking it really regularly I could take it abit less frequently & still have good supply. Also, after this first week, if my supply dropped (which I could tell by how long it took for my boobs to feel full again IYSWIM) & I took it, I would respond quite fast, usually in an hour or so.

Good luck! Without it I wouldn't have been able to breast feed til 6 months so I'm pleased I used it.

Depends on your circumstances. Check out Dr Jack Newman online for his domperidone advice.

I wrote my story on these previous threads which you might find useful:

Any questions please do ask.

I am so thankful for having a GP who would prescribe the 9 tabs a day Dr JN recommends. My 15mo baby is still bf on demand & I could not have managed it otherwise. Unfortunately 3x tabs a day did nothing for me but it does for some people.
Best of luck.

Im going to try again with the dr and make sure its not a locum I get this time. Plus im going in armed with papers.

Good luck. I also had a letter from a lactation consultant to support my request. You might get the same support from your GP if you have spoken to one of the BF helplines before you go. They will give you the most up to date knowledge.
Good luck!!

I was prescribed it, and it worked, still bfing my 17 month old. I looked into it when my 4th was tiny but the dosage was far lower when I was prescribed it (with my 5th baby, 5yrs later). I think it was something like over 8 days, increasing the dose to about 50mg (wasn't high like I'd read it should be), then down again, then so many days without it, then again if needed but I really can't remember and I don't think I kept the info- I think the gp took it. I think I did it for three weeks, then he'd regained his birth weight (was a couple of months old by this point), then by the time he was 4 months, he started gaining weight at a good rate and refusing a bottle. I also took fenugreek, but started taking that after the domperidone I think (I can't remember, wasn't that long ago Blush )
