Newborn has serious preference for left boob

DD is 5 days old and has a serious preference for my left boob. She latches on straight away. But she fights when I put her on the right boob. It can take a good few minutes to get her on. It's not helped by the fact my right nipple is slightly cracked so it hurts me more as well but I'm really trying to keep her feeding even between both.

Is this normal? Why would she have a preference or can she sense me tensing up?

Anyone any advice?

Mine loves the right one. His latch is so much better on it. I think it's because they point in different directions!

Try different positions for feeding for each breast? Different holds?

It seems to quickly become a vicious circle. The latch takes longer so it gets more sore so latching is harder.

I fed DD for two years off my right breast, she wouldn't touch the left one.

I know this was down to a neck injury when she was born and we waited a bit too long to get her to a cranial osteopath.

All four of mine have preferred the right. It has an easier let down.

The left is always the one I get tense about too- therefore can create a vicious circle. The rugby hold helped me to get them to feed from the other side (the less favoured).

I had a midwife with my first who said not to worry she had known a couple of women who had managed to feed exclusively from one breast, that comment really helped me.

My way of solving it was when they were fractious I always started to feed on the preferred side. If they weren't I started them on the other side. I always have offered both sides every feed. It's worked for me although maybe a slight deviation from standard advice.

Both of mine had a left boob preference, due to the right having a letdown which took longer than the left to come but when it did was very powerful. I used to try and trick them by using had rugby ball hold, then they seemed to grow into it Grin

Take her to a cranial osteopath. Even after one treatment her latch will improve. I'm a bit tired to wax lyrical about it now but you can google it and decide for yourself. I initially took a baby on the advice of several BFing Counsellors.
