Taking ready made formula abroad

Hi, we are going to Majorca in two weeks time with DD1 (6) and DD2 (9 mo). DD2 is fed SMA Gold and we only use the ready made bottles (this was my 'reward' to myself for expressing 5x daily until she was 7m as breastfeeding didn't work out this time). DD1 was bf, so we have never used powdered formula.

I really want to continue to use the ready made stuff, but realise that for holiday powder would be more sensible.

I am seriously considering taking some of the 1 litre bottles we use in our suitcases. Has anyone done this, or know if it's possible?

We have a fairly generous baggage allowance, so weight isn't the primary problem. Would x-ray machines pick them up as 'suspicious'? Are they likely to burst at altitude? We would put them in sealable bags and wrap them in soft towels (or similar).

We are self-catering and have a fridge and have also arranged for a steriliser etc, so there should be no problem once we get there.

Can anyone offer any advice, please?
Thanks

I have never tried this but based on how many 1l bottles of spirits most people come back with in their cases I don't think it would flag up. Grin

They shouldn't burst (I've never had cartons or bottles of formula burst at altitude) and it wouldn't pop up as suspicious at all. I assume you mean that the bottles are going to go into your checked in luggage because you are going to have problems/it taken off you if it's in your carry on luggage. If they burst you will have to use the formula in 24 hours once it's bee opened.

TBH I would give powder a go, it is a lot easier than lugging bottles BUT you will have lots of space on the way back! How long are you going for?

Sounds like a good idea.

You can pre-order formula from boots in the departure lounge of UK airports. You might be able to keep a closer eye on it in the cabin. I also carried 3 bottles of rum from Cuba in my hold luggage and they survived OK!

Thanks for your replies.

So, it seems as though it is possible, (though not particularly sensible!)

DH thinks we should just take powder and I'm sure it would be fine. I am just paranoid about preparing it, having never done it. Ridiculous really, as I'm a chemist who has spent years making solutions to exacting standards!

We are going for 11 nights, so probably not realistic to take enough for that length of time. I think I will take a couple of bottles to see us through the first few days and a carton of powder.

Regarding ordering from Boots at the airport, is that just the 250ml bottles or would I be able to get the litre ones? Would I have to pre-order them?

We've also brought bottles of wine back from various places and they've always been intact at the other end. Friends thought we were mad, but it always worked out OK!

Thanks again...
