Constipated on formula

Sunflower1985 · 11/08/2013 20:37

My ds is 8 days now. Topping up with formula due to jaundice / weight loss / early latching problem leading to current low supply (only 10 ml a time)

Since adding in the formula he's gone from 4 poos a day to one or less. Has anyone else experienced this with newborn? Ideally want to cut out formula but want to wait til he's pink and back to birth weight and my milk is up.
Thank you

That isn't constipated. Provided he has plenty of wet nappies and isn't in obvious pain don't worry. I know bf babies that went once a week!

It can vary so much. I used to record details on nappies from DD1!

sunflower, my newborn is the same. At 6 days old, she hasn't had a poo since day 2. All the maconium poo is put and she needs to fill up her system before doung a poo. Midwife said this is fine as long as she had 2-3 wet nappies a day. I feel bad but its quite normal apparently. She is also farting like there is no tomorrow and frankly, she stinks!

This needs a view from your midwife, Sunflower (Breasticals - once a week pooing is not normal for a newborn, and is only normal for bf babies after a few weeks old. It always needs checking out).

It could be the formula, even though it is only a small amount each time.

It could be linked to the weight loss.

Whatever....you need to tell the midwife.

Are you getting help to boost your milk supply - doing all the basic things? :)

When I introduced formula to DD (about 3 months to top up feeds) she didn't do a poo for 7 days. plenty of wee but i was panicking and the websites said just wait... She wasn't on food yet so I was really concerned. Took her to the GP- they said just wait... Maybe more water. Spoke to a friend she said tiny bit of watered down prune juice. She did the biggest whopping poo I have ever seen. Poor little thing. After that she got better. I didn't want to change her formula in case it started the cycle of adjusting again.

But TikTok the baby is going every day. That is not a constipated baby.

Agree though that if you are worried OP always check with the midwife.

No, I didn't say she was constipated!

Did I?

Lack of pooing in a new breastfed baby can indicate the baby needs feeding more.

It doesn't have to mean that, but it can mean that....

Thank you. Went to a class today led by an experienced midwife. Of course he fed like a dream there, good latch, sleepy still but with long gulps. She suggested reducing the formula slowly and gave advice on bottle feeding (we were doing it far too quickly so he was getting lazier each time he went back on the boob).
He is pinker today, so that's good. Done two poos so far.
The main thing is to keep him sucking when feeding, this is exhausting work but I'm determined. Apparently I'm doing it all right (strip him down, alternate boobs, tickle feet etc etc). The only problem is I've not slept since 5 am and he's hungry!!!
