Had mastitis once with DS1 but that was over two years ago and can't really remember how I felt he was so little and I was so sleep deprived at the time! Never had any more problems with him.
DS2 is 14 weeks and I have had blocked ducts almost every week since he was born, and have always managed to clear them with a hot shower, lots of massaging and feeding lots from affected side. Not sure why I'm getting this so much, he feeds well and empties breast fully, I wear non wired feeding bras (it was wearing an underworked bra that gave me mastitis the one time with DS1). I wear him in a sling a lot as I did with DS1 and this seems to cause it sometimes but it's the only way to get him to sleep in the day! I try to avoid it until blocked duct has cleared though.
So I've had a banging throbbing headache for last two days, my eyes feel like they're going to bulge out of their sockets inwards if that makes sense Hmm this morning I woke up with an achy boob....AGAIN and all day I have been in agony aching all over, headache and feverish hot and cold. I tried massaging boob in shower and it helped a bit but still very slightly sore, not agony though and no red patches.
So is it likely to be mastitis or a blocked duct and unrelated Virus?Don't want to bother doctor if I don't have to as they're a forty minute drive away, and generally aren't that knowledgable about breast feeding issues, although I know some of you guys are. Currently huddled under duvet wearing a dressing gown and shiveringSad

Sounds like it could be mastitis to me. You really need Antibiotics if it is. make sure you get a 10-14 day course as 7 days is not enough for mastitis.

I'd probably risk waiting until tomorrow if I was you as you've had other symptoms so could be something else.

Oh, when I had mastitis paracetamol didn't touch my high temperature, but ibuprofen worked well.

highlandbird · 28/07/2013 19:32

Oh I thought I couldn't have ibuprofen, was told that when bf DS1 and no the paracetamol isn't touching it.....
Thanks jolly, will wait and see how I feel in the morning, can't sleep now though as DS2 has woken up but at least I can feed him!!
Away to get the ibuprofen, first time I've been unwell and in charge of both DCs feeling quite sorry for myself!

Here's the Kellymom page :) ibuprofen is in the safest category for breastfeeding. Hope you feel better soon.

poor you. Sounds like mastitis to me. Had it twice recently. awful Sad Sad. Get onto out of hours gp and get anti biotics. They cleared it up for me really quickly. Good luck.

Hi Highlandbird,

Sounds like mastitis to me, here is a useful page on kellymom with more info on mastitis vs blocked ducts kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

Ibuprofen is fine while bf, when I had mastitis I took ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time as instructed by doctor (obviously only taking them the frequency written on the pack, 4x a day for paracetamol, 3x a day for ibuprofen iirc), it seemed to help, and ibuprofen helps reduce swelling/engorgement in the breasts as well.

Hope you feel better soon

Sorry read your posts and forgot to come back and say thank you Blush
Blocked duct had gone by yesterday morning but felt vile so went to docs anyway, have strep throat (?) feels a lot like tonsillitis / flu anyway but penicillin kicked in and am on the mend.
Was very grateful for advice about ibuprofen and links to kellymom website, loads of useful info on there, thanks again Thanks
