Very sore nipple- white?- please help!

I am BFing a teething 11month old and suddenly have an excruciatingly sore nipple. It looks (sorry for TMI) like it has gone sort of white and puffy on the end, if this makes sense. Anyone have any idea what it could be (just bad latch maybe?) and if there's anything I can do about it?

Thank you very much for the quick reply- yes sounds like that's probably what it is. Am slightly worried about thrush too after reading that as it's definitely a burning pain and worse after feeding.

Think will try the hot compress thing folowed by feeding and hope that does the trick first.

Thanks for the sympathy- it is horrible, and huge compared to the picture linked to there (covers most of the tip of the nipple). Ouch...

Hmmm, yes it does seen a bit extensive to be just one duct. So you can get infected nipples? Will look into that, thanks (gulps).
