Dd2 is 4 weeks old and bf'ing has being going great with big weight gain etc. However yesterday both nipples have become extremely sore, I have started using cream again but it doesnt seem to be helping. Only the nipples feel hot and I cant feel any lumps so do you think its just a case of sore nipples or could it be anything more??

Thrush??

Can't answer what it is (only 5 weeks in as well!) but have you got some breast shields? Supposed to just wear them for 40 mins (I may have gone longer!) but they hold your clothes away from your nipple and allow it to breathe and heal rather than having to walk around with your boobs out all the time!
Hopefully someone else can offer advice on what the problem is - but this may help in the healing of your nipples...

Its really strange because im also leaking loads (had stopped wearing pads) not just a few drops but enough to actually soak through all my clothes so maybe my supply is adjusting???

City, is thrush just in your nipples and are there any other syptoms??

Stuck, thats a really clever idea although in this poxy heat its quite nice walking around topless :-)

Not sure - I've not had thrush (yet! Have every other breastfeeding challenge going), but I believe it can manifest as nipple pain after a prior period of painfree feeding. I bet the Kellymom website would have a good page on it if you look it up..

I had similar pains. I used gel pads which you put in your bra which are either cool or warm.

Thanks I will have a look.

Are you able to go to a breastfeeding clinic?

CakesAreNotTheAnswer · 23/07/2013 14:43

Are your nipples itchy at all? reddened? Do you have shiny or peely patches?
check inside your baby's mouth too. Is there a thick white coating?

If the answer to any of these is yes then it probably is thrush and you need to get it dealt with. If not then it may be that, as your baby has got bigger, you need to have another look at your positioning to ensure the latch is still correct as this is the most usual cause of pain.

Do get him checked for tongue tie too.
