Hi we have just realised that the flap of skin under our son's top lip is a "thing", it has to be a lip tie or labial tie! It goes right between his teeth. I posted about how difficult he has become to feed at the moment but I think this must have something to do with it. He had a tongue tie snipped when he was very young and that seemed to help his latch, but apparently top lip ties are harder to do. He has always had this flap, but we just never thought it wasn't a standard thing. It was bleeding the other day after a feed which is why I started to look into it. Feeding seem to be worse now that he has top teeth- and it is so obvious that this flap goes between the front teeth and could force them apart- also, I suppose it is awkward for him to latch smoothly with teeth and a restricted top lip. Is there any advice about what to do here? If it needs to go, we definitely don't want him to have a general anesthetic!

If going private is an option, you need to look at either Malcolm Levinkind in North London, or John Roberts at Cote Royd Dental Practise in Huddersfield.

They are both dentists and use laser for lip and tongue ties. They trained with Dr Kotlow who is a leading expert on the subject.

Neither of them will use GA. Last I heard, John Roberts is only doing under 1s and over 6yos.

It is important to get this checked out. Some lip ties form little pockets where milk and food can lurk increasing the chances of decay in the front teeth.

Oh, sorry, also ask to join the Tongue Tie Babies Support Group on Facebook. There are loads of people on there with lots of experience and wisdom.

You could do nothing. My Ds now 5 lip was exactly as you've described your babys.

Ds had a tongue tie as well. The main thing is risk of decay& it can be difficult to keep the teeth clean.

My Ds has no speech problems or dental problems.
