Has anyone else had a breast abscess?

And want to share your story?

I've got a 10 week old DS, he's my third. I was taken into hospital last week with suspected mastitis, a temp of 39.6 and pulse of 150. I was in a terrible state and put on iv antibiotics and a saline drip. DS wasn't allowed to stay with me as I was incapable of looking after him. After being exclusively breastfed he was a little star and took to formula no problem. The reason they reacted so quickly is because they thought I was developing septicaemia. I cannot fault the hospital at all, it was all taken very seriously.

As you can imagine the pain was excruciating. I was given a cocktail of painkillers which I'm still taking now 3 days on.

I'm going cold turkey too so I'm engorged as well, it's not ideal I know but I cannot bare the thought of my boobs being touched. I'm gutted but I'm also very proud of myself to getting to 10 weeks. My first I got to 9 weeks and second 2 weeks after a terrible time with tongue tie and mastitis (it was straightforward that time).

Anyway, it was found I had an abscess in my breast, I've never heard of it before and wondered how common it was? I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself at the moment I think!

Glad you're on the mend! I did, about 15 months ago when DD was 4 months. It got better very quickly once I was being seen by specialists - it's the misdiagnosis by 3 GPs and the unhelpful treatment by a general surgeon that still bugs me! I have a small scar, maybe 1 cm across, and the tissue feels a bit less 'plump' immediately around it. I think it took three quite painful treatments, and then about 2 weeks healing before it cleared up, which from the mess my boob was in wasn't too bad!
I didn't realise quite how I'll I had been until I got better, so hopefully you'll be feeling much, much better very soon.
Commiserations on joining a small and yukky club Grin
