Windy Grunty Baby!

Hi, I have an 11 day old baby who seems to like eating air as much as milk. When she feeds - she is ebf- she is sucking in a lot of air with much squeaking and gasping. She does this directly and also when I use nipple shields.

This doesn't bother my too much. What does bother me is that its hard to burp her and, even if we do, she then grunts, sqwaks, and squeaks for ages sounding really distressed and like she might be choking. Day feeds I can live with this, and indeed can keep her upright for a bit which seems to help. Once we put her down to sleep- which at night will be immediately after a feed- it can last an hour or more.

So. Does anyone have any idea how I can minimise the whole air sucking grunting thing?

Have you had your latch checked?

Have you tried infacol or similar to help her get the burps up?

Is she distressed, though, Sarah? Grunts and squawks are normal baby noises, and some babies make them really loudly :)

Ask your midwife what might be going on.

Healthy babies in distress will cry - if she is not crying, then she's not upset.

If she is 'hard to burp' then how about not trying to burp her?
