BF 7 week old has suddenly decreased

My 7 week old is being BF and I know we don't go by timings but usually she will feed 20 mins (thereabouts) each side with a nappy change and break inbetween.
She tends to go a good 4 hours between feeds in the day and 6 hours at night.
I feed her on demand.
My worry is this. Suddenly she's dramatically reduced the amount of time on the boob to about under 10 mins each side with no break. It feels like I'm not giving her enough.
For instance just now, she was asleep but as I'd fed at 2pm I wanted to offer her the boob. She fed from one side gulping, until she became fussy and I burped her. Then after that she wouldn't go back on that boob. I offered her the other side which she gulped for about 10 minutes then became fussy and crying. I tried burping, nothing came up, and she wouldn't take the breast again.
I gave her to my husband when she settled straight away.
Any ideas? Is this normal as they get older? She's been putting on weight and on the 50th percentile. Xxx

I would say 4 hourly feeds for a 7 week old isn't enough. My dd would only ever feed for about 10-20mins on one boob but at that age would require feeding again after about 2 hours, sometimes 3.

My advice is don't worry about how long she is in on the boob for but increase how often you are offering it to her iyswim?

I would have thought that too but she's been like that from week two. The health visitor was surprised but not worried as she's been putting on weight well.
This fussiness on the breast has only been the past few days so I'm worried she won't be getting enough.
Maybe a growth spurt as she's sleeping a lot. She doesn't seem ill to me.

have you got any rl support? A bfing support group?

Its great that she is putting on weight but I would def encourage her to feed more often, if it is a growth spurt she would def need feeding more than 4 hourly!!

I will try that thank you.
Yes there is a BF I am going to try out next week, hopefully I can iron out the issues Smile

If she's thriving and putting on weight and doesn't want to feed more frequently then that's all good.

I agree that 4 hourly at 7 weeks seems like a long gap, but the whole point of feeding on demand is that you respond to their feeding cues - if that's what she's demanding then....?

In terms of the length of feeds, ds2 is 9 weeks and is done and dusted with both sides in 10-15 minutes. I have a fast letdown and he takes it in like a bloody hoover!

I agree with getting things checked by someone just in case, but it could well be normal for your dd. (and of course she also reserves the right to completely change her feeding habits at any time and start feeding round the clock that will be ok too Wink)

Ok today I have tried a different approach.
As she's getting heavier I'm finding it more difficult to get comfortable holding her to feed. Up until now we have been doing the rugby hold but she's a long baby and can be very wriggly. So today we have laid on the sofa belly to belly and I'm letting her go to the breast when she wants it and things between us are much more relaxed. A little fussy but not as bad as feeding whilst I'm sitting up.
