anyone got pregnant while breastfeeding?

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 14:40

Or know anyone who has? I am pretty in tune with my body and 'feel' pregnant as I have my last 2 pregnancies and was right both times. However, I have a 10week old baby who is exclusively breast fed but she has a dummy and most nights goes at least 6-7 hours without a feed. Very settled baby. I had spotting on 16th &26th, may. The first one my health visitor said would have been my first pp period so assuming my 2nd spotting much have been implantation? I have loads of pregnancy symptoms eg tired, grumpy, sensitive nipples, one sore boob, sudden bouts of feeling sick etc. So what do you think? Possibility? When can I test? Would be interested to hear others experience with this as my 1st daughter was bottle fed so this is all new to me. Thanks in advance x

Yes I did but DD was 16 months, my periods returned when she was a year. She was also still feeding through the night. My symptoms this time are much reduced, but I hear that's common if you're still feeding your older one.

sleepyhead · 13/06/2013 15:14

If you're having pregnancy symptoms then I'd test now. I suspect if your symptoms are to do with early pg then it'll be far enough along to give a positive.

If you get a neg though then I'd test again in a week, and then a week again if another neg to be sure.

Are you using any contraception?

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 15:21

No, not using any contraception and we got pregnant in the first month of trying last time. I am 24 and would love to have my final baby asap so I can get back to work and continue my career. I always seem to get lots of symptoms early (i had a massive blue vein appear on my boob after about a week last time) so think I will test Sunday as that will be the next date my period is due?

My mum ! I was 5 weeks old and exclusively breast fed, 11 months between me and my sister Blush

Knittingnovice · 13/06/2013 15:23

Yes, was pg with DD1, by DS 1st birthday, but my periods returned after 5 months despite exclusive bf and DS not sleeping through the night.

The only way you'll know for certain is if you POAS Grin

Whojamaflip · 13/06/2013 15:24

yep dd was 5 months when I caught with ds Blush

megandraper · 13/06/2013 15:25

Twice! Both times after I'd stopped night-time feeds. The first time - periods hadn't yet started again, so must have been very first ovulation The second time, I'd had one period. Both times baby about 1 year old, but until then I'd been feeding multiple times during the night - both times got pg again within a couple of weeks of stopping night feeds.

Both times 'felt' pregnant at what turned out to be about 5-6 weeks.

BabsAndTheRu · 13/06/2013 15:30

Yes, she's sitting on my knee, DS2 was only 9 months when found out DD was on her way.

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 15:31

Thanks ladies. Given me some hope :) I must be mad. Haha. Is it more positive that she's going half the night without feed? Did any of you ladies have any spotting after your lochia?

leedy · 13/06/2013 15:59

Twice here as well - though not until older child was over a year (intentionally - was using contraception until then).

Annunziata · 13/06/2013 16:10

Four times for me!

I am surprised she goes so long! How are her nappies?

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 16:22

She usualy has 1 pokey nappy a day. She usually gets up about 8, has a few feeds in the morning and sleeps in between, is awake with cat naps all afternoon then pretty much constantly feeds from about 6 til 10 then go to bed and will wake up between 4 and 5 for another feed. How old were your babies when you got pregnant again?

WoTmania · 13/06/2013 16:27

yep, twice and no periods between the pregnancies (gets quite tedious explaining to HCPs). Second time we were using condoms too and the BF one was nursing at night still too

DramaAlpaca · 13/06/2013 16:29

I did. DC1 was seven months & had dropped a couple of night time feeds.

We weren't using contraception because we didn't mind having another one quickly, but my periods hadn't returned & I naively didn't expect it to happen so soon as it had taken nearly a year to conceive DC1.

I ended up with a 16 month age gap, which was a bit of a shock to the system! Worth it though.

shelley72 · 13/06/2013 16:39

yes i did three times. periods returned quite early with DC1, but with DC2 not until about a year and she was still feeding through the night when i got pregnant. DC3 due soon Smile

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 16:50

oh blimey. It is very possible then! Will have to wait until Sunday to do a hpt to find out for sure then. Wow. Shocking as if you google 'can I get pregnant while breastfeeding' a lot of sites say no chance and a lot say its nearly impossible. Just joined mums net today and very impressed with response to my first post. Thank you :)

Yes, DD was 6 months old when I became up duffed with DS.

shelley72 · 13/06/2013 17:41

Yes you can, as we all prove! Bf can delay return of your period, but should never be used as a fail safe method of contraception. There will always be that gap where your period hasn't yet returned but you ovulate. That's my understanding anyway (and that of my bf teacher).good luck with the test!

IsThisAGoodIdea · 13/06/2013 17:46

Yes, but DS was 14 months and obviously no longer being exclusively bfd.

My periods returned at 6 weeks post-partum.

The pg was completely unplanned and I actually miscarried at 5 weeks. Not relevant to the thread but I didn't want to dissimulate.

IsThisAGoodIdea · 13/06/2013 17:47

Oh, and suddenly agonising boobs when he latched on was my first clue..

ilovemybabies123 · 13/06/2013 17:53

Ahh I have noticed that my boobs are very sensitive and her mouth always feels cold - which it never normally does. All very interesting :) will let y'all know

I got pregnant with DS2 when DS1 was about 3 months and still bf (although not exclusively) - 1 year and 3 weeks between them. It's hard at first, but my boys are now 1.5 and 2.5 and are great friends and entertain each other.

WoTmania · 13/06/2013 19:24

wonderful Kellymom

Basically if your baby is under 6 months, EBF, your baby doesn't go for more than 4 hours between feeds in the day or 6 hours at night and you haven't had a period breastfeeding is a fairly effective form of contraception but as soon as you introduce solids/water, your period has returned or your baby goes for longer between feeds the effectiveness plummets.

Branleuse · 13/06/2013 19:27

yes, I have an 11.5 month gap between my last two babies, and was exclusively breastfeeding when I fell

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 13/06/2013 19:40

Yes! 13 months between my 2 and i think its lovely to have them so close together. Good luck!
