when does it stop hurting?!

Dd is 3 days old and bf is going as well as can be expected. Just so there is light at the end of the tunnel, when did tht awful toe curling pain when latch first occurs stop?! I bf my older daughter for 6 mths a few yrs ago but can't remember! Sure we'll get thru it but nice to look forward to it stop hurting!

Took about 2 weeks for me.

Although with 1baby it took around 6 weeks.
Got there in the end though. :)
Congrats on your newborn and hope the toe curling eases off very soon.

I can't remember exactly when but my DD is less than six weeks old and the pain stopped quite a while ago. I was in tears for the first few days but it got better. What sort of pain are you having? I had ridiculously sore, bleeding nipples due to poor latch and then, after that was sorted, a kind of sharp pain inside my boob with the first few sucks. If it doesn't go away, mention it to someone in case it's something else (thrush, infection, blocked ducts, etc)that needs sorting out.

Think it took me about 5 days this time around (assuming latch is ok etc). It is horrible, I got through it by big deep breathes and swearing my head off (if no one else was around!) for the first few sucks! Good luck, hope they toughen up soon.

I really hope it's soon. I think I have actually cracked a filling gritting my teeth. One boob is getting better the other not so much. Two weeks in.
Doesn't seem a very well designed system because it makes you anxious about feeding when it should be a good thing.

It took the best part of 6 weeks with my first but only about 2 with my second.
I never found it a comfortable experience but fed my DD for 13 months.
The first 6-8weeks are the worst if you can stick it out!

I predict 4th May for you will be pain free! Grin

My advice is to check for tongue tie asap.

if you are in pain beyond 2 weeks, baby feeds"constantly" but no weight gain or very slow, baby can't latch on properly, or looses the latch (slips off often), nipples are cracked/sore/bleeding, tongue tie is very likely to be the cause of problems.

till then take 2 paracetamols every 6 hours for the next 5 days.

Oh, and anyone who tells you 'if you're doing it right it doesn't hurt' is talking bollocks!
Have never met anyone that didn't find it painful.

I used to cry during feeds at first it hurt so much and I had a badly cracked nipple which didn't help. After about 6 weeks I was all healed, we had a good latch and all was brilliant. Get your latch checked if it's not improving within a week or two - don't struggle on or give up, an alternative feeding position might help.

My dd is 10do and things have got massively better in past 36hrs. We had latch issues, which caused some serious nipple carmage, then mastitis but I feel I'm coming out of the woods. Still a bit of latch pain, but nips are nearly healed and in general there is hardly any pain compared to first 8 days.

and the afterpains (uterus contracting down) when bf get worse after every child you've had - with 5th and 6th I lived on Co-codamol for a week, then switched to paracetamol.

they both had tongue-tie btw (op was down around 3 weeks each time)

first few "bites" felt harsh for about a month at least, but 2 mins into feeding it was ok.

Thanks for all your replies - lo (fleur) has got a monster suck but latch seems good. Fantastic mw showed us 'biological nurturing' which has been a life saver and made things so much easier and enjoyable if you can call it that at this stage so I think it's jst a case of grin and bear it until my nipples toughen up a bit! amazing are you a star wars fan?! Grin hopefully it'll be a couple of weeks before I can go public and stop swearing like a loon when she latches Blush [city] I had mastitis twice with dd last time so know how horrible it is. There seems to be quite a lot of support on offer this time which I didn't know about before I'm my area so if we do run into any probs, help is at hand. dopey I agree! Like hormones, engorgement, bleeding and lack of sleep isn't enough, you would of thought that nature would have made one bit of childbirth easy?! Wink

My little girl is 3wks and I reckon I only had around 5 days where I had to count to ten-soooo painful but now am completely pain free. But it's tough going 5 days of feeding every 2 hrs a lot of swearing was crammed into the 1st 10seconds of each feed!!!

Same here with my week old. Not sure if I'm doing it wrong (we started off well) or if I just need to wait until my nips harden up.
