Is this mastitis?

DS2 is nearly 3 months old and breastfeeding. Today, both breasts feel tender and sore, especially the right one - they feel like they have 2 or 3 hard lumps in. I can't see anything on the surface of the skin (I thought mastitis showed as a purple splodge on the skin) and I feel okay generally bar a vague headache and weariness I've had all day (motherhood!)
Can anyone advise me? Its hard to pick him up cos my boobs are so tender

Mastitius often starts out how you describe.
Gentle Massage helped me from letting it get worse from the stage where you are (may be).

bugger! You were supposed to say "oh no, everyone gets that, it will be gone by morning"!!
So massage generally or whilst he is feeding?
Anything else I should do?
God, hope you are wrong Zebra, breastfeeding has been horrendous enough as it is

Sorry... mine started like this too. On all three occasions, I tried massage, expressing, hot flannels & constant feeding but resorted to antibiotics each time. I hate taking ab but I was on the floor with the pain (sorry!). Good news is that am still feeding and ds was not affected.

With me, the red skin came after the lump.

I feel like a doommonger now...

Yes, its best to keep feeding, apparently - poor you. When I had it I think it was because of blocked ducts, and the thing that really helped was putting the shower jet on it, alternately hot and cold (and feeding/expressing afterwards which cleared the blockage eventually)- I did get antibiotics pdq as well though. I got horrid feverish symptoms, so if you can get anyone on hand to help out, I would. Hope it clears up soon or doesn't get worse for you.

It only got a little worse for me, Lisa78 (honest), and that's only because I was slow to realise what was happening. After that it got better, by massage, feeding frequently... oh, and I used to 'jiggle' the breasts to try to work the clogged milk loose... probably doesn't really help, but DH was very keen to help.
