Reflux? Comfort feeding then screaming

DS2 is 5 weeks old, has been a bit possety from birth, but his brother was so used to it.

However, he's had a cold and now screams all evening unless he's feeding. He's having expressed breastmilk and has gone from having 650 ml a day to over 850 ml but brings a fair amount of that back.

Any suggestions, please! He's been screaming now since he woke at 4 and we're going a bit spare!

Um no sorry but from my experience that sounds pretty standard behaviour for a newborn! DS2 is 8 weeks and starting to get a bit less angry now :)

my DD cluster fed from 2 weeks old between 5 & 9 pm

she had to be on the boob with the odd break

she didn't bring anything back up tho

my DS had silent reflux so was a biiiig comfort feeder

Is he arching his back, doing a cough or anything?

Arching his back, coughing but we've all been coughing, bringing back curdled milk and really uncomfortable in the evenings.

We've now tried giving him smaller, more frequent feeds and after each feed he screams that there is no more, but he's at least settling now and not bringing so much back. Trouble is, how do we make sure he's getting enough milk? Argh, don't want to starve him, also want to help him not spend 12 hours straight screaming.

Ate you getting him weighed? If he is putting on weight ok and producing lots of wet and dirty nappies he should be fine.

DS1 had reflux and we found infant Gaviscon and comfort milk made him much more comfortable.

He'll be weighed on Tuesday at his 6 week check so that will be useful, but he's only been like this since having a cold last week so not sure where that leave us.

Wet and dirty nappies really not an issue, you are right, I'd starting forgetting the basics. If he's producing lots of wet nappies he can't be dehydrated, which he would be if he wasn't getting enough milk, wouldn't he.

I may ask the doctor about infant gaviscon, just so we know what the options are and get the doctors opinion. He's on breastmilk so should be comfortable enough for him!

Yes I think DS2 may also be a bit refluxy too but I'm breastfeeding this time round do not quite sure giving Gaviscon will be as easy. I'm going to hold off a while and see how we go as it can do make them quite constipated so swapping one problem for another!
