My mil asked me how long I planned to bf for. I said probably up to a year (I go back to work then). My dd is now 6.5 months and thankfully bf has gone well and I do enjoy it. She now keeps saying how bf after 6 months is revolting (she squeals at this point!) and wrong!! Instead of standing up to her I find myself saying things like 'oh, I'll only bf in the eves by the time dd is nearing one'! Any good responses people cab think of?

Well, you can either blind her with science and tell her why it's still important (kellymom has lots on this), you can also quote WHO recommendations to give breastmilk until at least 2 years old.

Or...you can just smile sweetly and say that you are happy doing what you are doing.

My mother is like this. For her, the cut off point is ten weeks, this is how long she breastfed for so it's acceptable to her. I just say I'm not sure how long I'll do it, smile and nod whenever she mentions that I should stop... Feck it, it's your choice at the end of the day and good luck!:)

Yes, quoting guidance from various sources might work- there's plenty of evidence and you can spin it that her grandchild is getting the very best start in life.

Also, have you thought about challenging her? You don't have to be aggressive, when she says BF is revolting you could just smile and say 'what makes you say that, MiL?'- chances are she hasn't really thought about it, it's just a gut reaction from the way our society is anti-BF. If she analyses it a bit more she might change her mind.

Or you could be very honest and say that it upsets you and that constant criticism may damage your relationship.

Or just say " Don't be so silly"?

Can you raise one eyebrow? I can, and would in this situation. If done correctly, she will never query your parenting choices again.
