baby is three weeks old yesterday and does feed a lot as i know is normal, but today she has barely been off the breast - i would guess that in total, she's been off the boob for maybe an hour at most since half eight this morning! i know they do need to feed an awful lot while they're tiny, and i've read about cluster feeding and i know she will go on the boob to help the supply increase, but is this incessant feeding really ok? i'm worried she's not getting much/anything, although she does plenty of wet nappies and when i squeeze milk does come out, but it's hard not to fret when she seems so incessantly hungry. is this really just normal tiny baby behaviour or should i call my hv? my first child was formula fed so i'm a breastfeeding newbie and although i feel like i've read the whole internet where breastfeeding is concerned(!) i just feel a bit clueless and concerned and would greatly appreciate reassurance and advice

3 week growth spurt? No one told me about this phenomenon and I was Shock at how much DD wanted to feed, bang on 3 weeks!

oh haha i didnt think of a growth spurt! thank you - but i thought that was associated with cluster feeding which i (perhaps naively!) thought would be, you know, every hour or something, rather than nigh-on constantly!!

3 weeks to the day, my daughter started feeding at about 4pm. And didn't stop. Silly me, I thought 'Aha! Cluster feeding! This might continue until 11pm!' I was still feeding her at 7am the next morning. :)

I can smile now but then I was absolutely in pieces - drained, exhausted, ravenous and really fucking bored. But it's what she needed at that stage.

My advice is to make sure someone's around to feed/look after you, but otherwise take your daughter's lead and just roll with it. Good luck - the best thing about growth spurts is that they end eventually.

Dd3 had an epic growth spurt at 3 weeks and fed all the time. I was shattered but it doesn't last too long. Hang in there :)

ahh i consider myself reassured, thank you so much. she wore herself out eating so much and slept for TWO WHOLE HOURS on daddy's lap so that was nice and now obviously we are back to the grind but i am feeling a bit more cheerful about it than i was at five thanks to you! Grin

At 3 weeks I was genuinely concerned I'd get bed sores on my arse from feeding so much Shock
At nearly 9 months I'd pay good money to sit down at all! Grin
