DD is crap at bottles. any advice? do different brands make much difference?

DD is 20 weeks and has had a bottle of EBM most days since about 5/6 weeks. She had posterior tongue tie, snipped at 15 weeks ish. since then her breastfeeding has improved loads but she is still terrible on a bottle.

she will 'latch' properly onto the bottle at first and will drink the first 30-40 ml quickly. however she then pulls away and although she is still hungry, and wants the bottle back, she cannot seem to relatch. instead she sort of pushes the teat around her mouth with her tongue. when she does eventually manage to relatch she will gulp and gasp a lot while feeding and take in huge amounts of air, and will frequently pull away.

pretty sure it's not a breast preference thing - she isn't rejecting the bottle, just can't seem to get the technique right.

any advice? we are using NUK medium flow teats. is it worth trying different brands?

Sorry you still haven't had any replies, just wondering if you've ever tried her with a cup instead or even the bottles with a spout instead of a teat? Have a look here-

And hopefully this will BUMP again.

mm, that's an interesting idea, thanks!

Have you tried the medela calma teat? Quite pricey, but helped my LO in the early days between EBF and BFing.

minipie · 17/03/2013 17:33

thanks - will have a look!

My ds1 had problems latching and the only bottle that worked for us was the MAM ones which were great.

This describes my ds on the bottle for his first few months. We are using the breastflow bottle now after advice from a great breastfeeding councillor, also expensive, but you can buy just one on Amazon and see if it works. He has an untreated posterior tongue tie and "disorganised suck". Now 7m he takes his daily bottle very well from me and medium well from dp.

My bottle refusing baby took a mam teat I think because it is slightly flatter

TeWiSavesTheDay · 18/03/2013 10:57

Perhaps a teat you can vary the flow with would help? (The hole is a slit shape so twisting the bottle round gives different speeds) DD liked to have the first bit fast and then slower.

minipie · 18/03/2013 12:09

thanks all - I have borrowed a medela and a breast flow bottle and will try those out. will try mam next.

good to hear it may improve as she gets older. what age can they have a sippy cup?

How did you get on minipie?

orangeandlemons · 20/03/2013 19:30

My ds was terrible at bottle feeding. Clearly starving, but would not suck, and no physical problems. We had to start him on yoghurts at about 4 months on advice of HIV.

not tried yet knitterati, DD's reflux has returned over the past few days :( so don't want to introduce anything new at the moment. though thinking about it, I suppose it could actually help if it is easier for her... maybe will try this weekend.
