How often do your 4 month olds feed at night?

MacMac123 · 16/03/2013 07:27

Mine is breast fed, apart from bottle at 10pm and 10am of formula. She has in the past done longer spells at night, feeding at 10 then not again till 4.
Now she's reverted to feeding at 10, 1 and 4 Blush
I'm not doing anything differently! And she wakes up hungry at 7 so it seems like she is genuinely hungry at night. But I think there's an element of comfort too though as she doesn't feed for long in the night.
I'm wondering if perhaps my supply isn't good enough now she's bigger, or if she's having a growth spurt. Would love go hear about your 4 month olds/thoughts!

when my dd was four months she went through a huge growth spurt, she breastfed every 90 minutes for twelve days and twelve nights, sadly that was the end of our breastfeeding journey, i got so tired with it all and sick too that i just couldn't carry on. I hope you manage to get through it better than i did. I was told at bf group that it was normal at this age. Good luck

BucketsnSpades · 16/03/2013 19:44

oh dear, i didn't want to be the only person to reply to this since my experience wasn't completely positive, i hope someone comes along soon with a more hopeful reply.

MacMac123 · 16/03/2013 19:48

Actually it does help to hear my four month old isn't the only one being demanding! I don't mind night feeds, I just wish it was once between midnight and 7, not twice!!

This sounds very very normal! Well based on everyone on my postnatal thread. I'm sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with your supply! Google 4 month sleep regression....

DS' started waking occasionally for a night bottle around this time, or would wake up earlier than normal, or took way more feeds in the afternoon.

Repeat after me: this too shall pass.....

leedy · 16/03/2013 19:55

Four months is a classic time for weird sleep/feeding frenzies - it's a big developmental spurt, they're usually trying to roll over/work their binocular vision/get better head control/etc. and their wee brains are fried from it all. Also all that development needs fuel, of course.

So far DS2 isn't hitting it too badly at night but his naps have become wildly unpredictable and he frequently wakes up from them in a total frenzy of hunger. (also I could do without the put down-attempt to roll-TINY RAGE-pick up-TINY RAGE-put down etc. cycle)

Zara1984 · 16/03/2013 20:00

Lol Leedy you're so right about the Tiny Rage episodes

CitrusyOne · 16/03/2013 20:00

Dd is five months and exclusively breastfed. Up until about three weeks ago she was in a routine that you could almost set your clock by. Asleep by 7:30pm, feed between 12 and 1am, feed between 4 and 5am ( very quick one) and awake between 7:30 and 8:30.

Over the last three weeks we've had the most unpredictable wakings. Still only two a night- usually. But as early as 10pm. (On these nights she'll generally sleep til 4 or 5am) some nights she's woken at 12, then 2am then morning. I'm just going with it as she goes straight back to sleep afterwards. Am hoping that this too shall pass.....

CitrusyOne · 16/03/2013 20:04

Leedy, you're also right about the rage when waking from naps. I'd left dd with mum last week, she was asleep when I went and she woke whole I was gone. She went absolutely batshit when she woke. It's such a relief to know someone else is going through the same thing. She is a delight in many respects but it's like she just can't cope with the world at times!

MumOfTheMoos · 16/03/2013 20:16

Totally normal at 4 months!

MacMac123 · 16/03/2013 20:18

I love the way theres a term for it - 4 month sleep regression, will google that now. I also have a 4mo who right now won't go to bed and has watched ant and dec with me!!

CitrusyOne · 16/03/2013 20:35

To be fair to your dd, ant and dec ARE worth staying up for!!

CharlandOscar · 17/03/2013 18:39

My 4 month old wakes at 10-1.40-5 then 7ish. Could set my watch by him! I've been reassured this is normal!

leedy · 17/03/2013 18:50

In my four month old news, Captain No Nap is currently staring maniacally at me, having slept for twenty minutes in the last five hours...

MrsFuzzyBuzzy · 17/03/2013 18:50

Mine goes down 8ish, dream feed at 10, then 1am, then usually every 90 mins until I give up on the idea of sleep and get up for the day. She's been like this for weeks, and it's knackering... She's breast fed and I think has developed a bit of a feed to sleep association, which I probably need to do something about when I muster up enough courage. Yours sounds pretty normal OP, and much better than mine!

MummyNoName · 17/03/2013 18:54

Bed 6.30
Feed about ten
Feed about half one
Feed about half four
Up about 6am

Feeds in night are only quick feeds, with only a couple of oz of milk an straight back to sleep think its more comfort than hunger as its literally 2-3oz.

Come and join the club :o

Ds will be 17 weeks tomorrow, 4 calendar months on Tuesday. He's had his bath, is in his sleeping bag and will drop off imminently. He will wake between 12 and 1, then between 3 and 4 and be up for the day 5:30-6. He might nap 12-2 or he might snatch 5 minutes at the end of each feed (tbh this seems to suit him, he's a sunny little fellow!) He sleeps reliably in the sling, frequently in the car, sometimes in the buggy (pita living in a flat so not often used) sometimes on me and occasionally in his crib.

MaMaPo · 17/03/2013 19:30

I need to stop reading these threads - my daughter is about 2 weeks shy of 4 months and I am dreading the sleep regression!

OP, good luck!! It sounds like you have a perfectly normal little baby.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 17/03/2013 19:36

Dd is 3 1/2 months and goes to bed after bath and bottle at 7pm, we get her up at 10-10.30 for dream feed and she wakes at 6.30-7. I am bottle feeding and she didn't do this until I got her daytime naps sorted, 2x at least 45 mins in the morning and 2ish hours in the afternoon, I don't put her down for a nap after 5pm but she sometimes has a little snooze on her play gym. Please may this not go downhill!!!

ThreeWheelsGood · 19/03/2013 08:08

Mamapo - it's not a given, don't worry. I was worried too but baby is now 21 weeks (5 mo this coming weekend), no sign of any sleep pattern changes (thankfully, as she sleeps 11-9!).
