Water softeners and formula feeding

Hi, we've got a water softener built in at home. I'm currently giving my baby an occasional bottle of ready made formula but just thought that I might have a problem switching to the powdered one. We add salts and that can't be a good thing can it? Anyone have experience of this?

Water softeners are not usually connected to the kitchen tap for this very reason. You should never drink it, even adults. Definitely do not use softened water for baby milk!

As far as I know it's a definite no no and we were specifically told this when our softener was fitted. Its the same for anyone with any kidney issues or the very elderly i believe.Do you not have a separate tap for hard water fitted, we do and use that for all our cold drinks only tea and coffee etc use softened water so the kettle doesn't fur up.

When we looked into this we discovered that a glass of milk apparently has more sodium than a glass of softened water so unless there are health issues there shouldn't be a problem for a healthy adult, It'sovely a taste issue as far as we're concerned.

Eek! What about Brita water filters (the jugs)? I use water that's been filtered through it (then boiled) to make DS' bottles.

Was planning to use a brita filter but wasnt sure if this would be enough. We haven't lived here v long and didn't install the filter. Bit worried now!

brita water filter jugs dont use salts for softening they remove minerals and impurities. Water softened by salts should not be used for making up formula.
