Do probiotics pass into breast milk?

I.e. if I take them?

DD is 14 weeks and for last week has been having foul smelling, thick, beige poos - quite explosive (read messy) at times - I've lost count of how many outfits she's destroyed! Her tummy seems really gurgly and she is obviously in discomfort with it at times.

I'm not sure if she's picked up a bit of a bug. It also reminds me of DS's nappies when he was teething (though she is not showing any other signs of teething and is a bit young - compared with my others). Anyway I figured probiotics can't hurt. I bought some super strong capsules today, but not sure if it's enough for me to take them or if I should/can give them directly to her?

Probiotics work directly on and in the gut - I can't see how they could get into the milk, and change the composition of the milk, if you take them, but that's just a common sense assumption rather than anything certain. Giving them direct to a baby is something you might want to avoid unless you are sure she actually needs this effect....maybe check out your baby's symptoms with your HV or GP?

Thanks Tiktok. She seems happy enough most of this time, apart from when a poo is rumbling. Feeding plenty. But poos have quite suddenly changed colour, consistency and smell. Though everything I read is anything passes as normal for newborn poo!

Has she had any formula at all, Daffodilly?

No she's totally BF. Never had anything else, even water. I've not made any changes to my diet as far as I can think.

I assumed poo changes were to do with more bacteria becoming established in the bowel.

My DD seems smellier and more explosive now than a few weeks ago (she is coming up for 12 weeks) and colour has transitioned from green pesto to saffron cottage cheese and now more like full on turmeric, not had beige yet.

We also have evenings of screaming wind with gurgling tummy and impressive farts.

I guess I am trying to say they are all different, but if worried speak to HV, my assumption could be wrong!

My dc3 has reflux and food allergies, always had gut issues. I gave him BioGaia probiotic drops for babies.
