Colic - is bf really better than bottle?

DS is nearly 4 weeks and b/f but suffering from colic which seems to be getting worse. Is there any way bottle feeding could be better for him? The m/w said it could be because of my diet and so far I have eliminated: oranges, grapes, cabbage, beans, cauliflower, leeks, onions, garlic. But I have been a vegetarian since I was 12 and can't face a diet of steak and potatoes, which seems to be what is required! Could bottle feeding be the answer?

no I had the same problem with both my babies who were breastfed but it is far more common in bottle feds. Should stop around 12 weeks. I cut out caffeine and that seemed to help.

I'm sure it isn't Marsup. I personally think diet can be overrated esp as nobody knows what 'colic' really is. It just means crying! It might be wind, but it might not be. My ds howled like a banshee in the evening for weeks but I don't think he was windy. Then, suddenly, he stopped, all with no changes from me.

Marsup, big sympathy from me, I had it with dd & ds; from what I've read here I think it might have been my fast flowing boobs that caused it?

I have no scientific evidence but I can't imagine why bottles would be better.

It's awful when it's happening, that cry, the way they look all crumpled up in pain but it does go after 12 weeks or so...honest. I actually found it easier with ds as I knew it was just a phase.

Good luck. PS I messed with my diet too but never found anything which reduced the colic.

There's loads on diet and breastfeeding on these boards - you will see that the real evidence linking colic to onions and so on just doesn't exist which is not to say individual experience isn't real.

Yep - colic is really just unexplained and repeated crying. Just do whatever you need to do to soothe him, and that includes feeding him for ages and ages, if that's what he seems to want.

Yes, he will grow out of it.
