Woke in night last night very shivery/ cold with bad headache. Had same all day-v fluey. Breast slightly tender but not major, just feels a bit bruised. can feed off it fine. Went to docs and given antibiotics. Took second dose 8.30 and went to sleep. Woke to feed baby 9.10 then was suddenly violently sick. What's going on? Can mastits do this? Not sure if breast not being that sore means it's something else? Help!

Don't know on that one sorry, have you read the kellymom info? Maybe a call to one of the bfing helplines would help you decide?

Mastitis made me sick, flu symptoms plus very sore achey breast where feeding was very painful.

ellangirl · 03/03/2013 05:18

Def mastitis- wasn't sick again- think it happened because temp too high. Still v fluey feeling too. Breast got more sore through yesterday despite antibiotics so just trying to feed as much as poss from it but it is still a bit engorged and milk let down is slow. Never ever want this again- mastitis is the pits!!

It really is shit. The abs should kick in and relieve the flueyness soon.

Hope you feel better soon, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I have it too. Spent yesterday morning crying as I think it sparked off massive baby blues too. Take it easy as poss. Mastitis sucks.

ellangirl · 03/03/2013 09:31

Yes, feel a bit less fluey today, but weak- need to drink more and haven't felt like eating much. Feel like I haven't got as much milk- is supply much affected by being ill? Staines, sorry you're ill too Sad have you had a baby quite recently then?

Yes, you need to keep eating and drinking for sure! Am feeling much better today, been on anti bs since Friday. Had dd on Monday. Luckily she's been v easy up to now. Hope you feel better soon.

I had mastitis twice (bastard, BASTARD thing) which coincided with DS being ill and not eating as much as usual. At 6 weeks & 12 weeks (he's 20 weeks now and I HOPE I'm over getting it again. Though have my 'just in case' Cephalexin' on standby..)

I had it in left boob only and found it took almost a week for the milk to get back up to where it was before. Could only express about an 1oz from the left when before, 3oz no probs. Tried to use it as much as I could though so it didn't dry up completely. Even though it was painful at first. And t did eventually get better. Stocked up on fenugreek tablets as a last resort too but didn't have to use them in the end.

ellangirl · 03/03/2013 13:20

Ooh I tried fenugreek once- I smelt like a curry Blush
Am using affected boob as much as poss but she's not too interested- def not much there. Will keep working on it. Feeling better all the time- was actually hungry for lunch (hot dogs with yummy sausages courtesy of DH- yum!)

I'm prone to blocked ducts on one side ( latch had never been great) normally I'm good at clearing them, but i'vebeen away staying with family, wrestling 2 small children on and off planes etc and very run down with lack of sleep, so I guess that's why I got ill.

Feeding or expressing really helps to clear the infection I.e. every 2-3 hours day and night! Also helps keep supply up which does drop in infected breast. I was only getting 1/2oz when I was really ill. Compared to 6-9oz before bed normally.
