Codeine and BF

DD is now 15 months and is extremely established on solids.

I'm suffering from a horrible virus and normal painkillers just aren't cutting it.

Am I right to make the supposition that a bit of codeine now won't make a difference?

Thank you but again this is info about the effect on very young babies.

My son was prescribed codeine when he was around 15 months as a painkiller. He took it for about a week. He's fine. :)

As far as I understand, it's only a problem if the child is unable to properly metabolise the drug, and his body turns it into morphine. Very rare. Although, how you would know in advance, I don't know.

Will your DD take expressed milk in a bottle at all? Or does she have a natural big gap in her feeds? I'd guess that it'll be mostly through your system by the time the packet says you can have another dose.

showtunesgirl · 19/02/2013 19:21

Well I took it two hours ago and she's just had her bedtime feed. Generally during weekdays she only has a morning and night feed anyway.

And really, I'm feeling so shitty today I thought I'd chance it!

I take co-codamol (just the OTC stuff) as nothing else touches the sides when I'm ill or have a bad head. 9mo DS is fine Smile

HumphreyCobbler · 19/02/2013 19:27

My hospital gives out 30mg co-codamol as pain relief after a c section. Or they did after both of mine.

I am taking regular codeine and feeding dd3 who is 28 months. I read the info available and have decided that the main risk is for tinies and if you metabolise codeine fast. I now allow 2.5+ hours after before feeding. This is manageable with dd3 as she is older but that night be more difficult with a younger child

Well I was given morphine during the first three days after birth so I guess a bit of codeine at this point should be fine.

The only problem is that it's not working on me. I still feel awful. Sad

I was on co-codamol off and on last year quite a lot for a medical condition whilst bf'ing DC2 around the 12-15mo age. He seemed fine.

Oodsigma · 19/02/2013 19:53

Have you tried anti imflamitories instead of just pain killers?

showtunesgirl · 19/02/2013 20:13

Yes, been taking a tonne of ibuprofen.
