If it takes a couple of days for the milk to come in, what does the baby feed on in the meantime?

I'm the first of my friends to have a baby, and although I used to work in lingerie and advise expectant mothers this all the time, I never considered what the baby eats in the meantime!

Baby will be getting colostrum out of your breasts for a few days, it's not like they produce nothing, just that the thicker milk doesnt arrive till then!

For the first few days, you will produce small amounts of colostrum, a rich, yellowish milk which helps stabilise the baby's blood sugars and contains antibodies to support the developing immune system. This gradually changes to normal milk by about day 3/4.

X-post! :)

Ahhhhhh thank you! That makes sense. I'd heard of colostrum but somehow assumed it only happened the once at the birth! Feel very dim and guilty about knowing nothing and am off to amazon to buy a good bf book!
